When the bearings are getting worn will be able to feel it or hear them as they wear , because my Old Fat Lady is coming up on 100,000 miles ..

When your wheel bearings go, you can usually feel them thunking in the footpegs, at certain speeds.  Later, you can hear them grinding with your ears.  Don't worry about them as general maintenance.  Some last forever, and some don't.  I lost the infamous left rear single row (only), and replaced it with the cut down axle spacer and double row bearing.

Each time you change a tire, they should be carefully checked for smoothness of movement or obvious damage.  Though like the prostate, the finger check is not really foolproof.  But good enough for government work.

If you have problemos on axle reinstall MIGHT/MAYBE/COULD be wheel bearing problem-BUT NOT guaranteed!  2funny I have one of those H/F stethescopes with a long probe end thingy and when I have er up on he lift I spin the front wheel and have a listen. Bearings STILL smooth and quiet at 125000 some miles. U-joint and rear wheel bearings went kaka at 93000+ miles.  Iffin it ain't broke don't need fixin!  2funny RIDE SAFE.

If you have the wheels off for a tire change and you inspect the bearings and feel any slop in there then I would say replace the bearings otherwise don't.  Of course if you  feel something while riding Like the other fellows are saying then it's worth checking into. One of those on-going debates I think but technically wheel bearings are not maintenance items, and the ones that Honda put in there are top of the line. For what it's worth I changed mine because I messed around and damaged one of the grease seals at which point you pretty much have to change them then.  Just my 1.5 cents.
