My 98 Valk is a little hard to crank, then it idles but goes dead when I even slightly twist the throttle. I pulled the carbs and cleaned them, installed a new air filter, and I still have the same problem. Any ideas as to what it could be? Any advice would be appreciated.

Check battery voltage 3 ways. 1: Key off. 2: key on/engine off. 3: engine running.
If your battery is weak, the lower voltage might drop out the coils.

Also check the fuel line for kinks, also check for fuel flow with vacuum

Sounds to me like your slow jets or passage ways are still clogged.

Would really like to understand your problem a little better. If you could post a video to youtube and a link showing us the issue that would help a lot. You said the bike starts and idles but dies on throttle up? That is why you rebuilt the carbs and you have the same problem now, correct? If that's the case, battery is probably not the issue. Failing batteries will often crank, but not start the bike at all. Still, never hurts to put on a charger to elimiate completely. Let's say it starts, and will continually idle until you hit the throttle, then dies. If that's your symptom, the issue is fuel/air delivery. When you crank the throttle, the cables open the venturies allowing an increase in the air mixture. This cause the diaphragms that raise the main jets to rise and more fuel to flow into the mains. If there isn't enough fuel in the bowls to allow for the extra delivery, the engine will sputter or die. Bad float valves, or bad floats can cause the amount of fuel avalable in the bowls to drop and or not replenish quickly enough. Also, any kind of vacuum leak will disrupt proper air/fuel mix and have similar results. Even a loose timing belt can cause this issue as it throws off the valve timing. How does it idle? Smooth or rough? Hard to diagnose without more information. Please do a video if you can. Love to help.

Unless you got a load of bad fuel I doubt that all carbs are clogged, it sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Check the petcock, the vacuum hose on the #6 intake that goes to the fuel valve, hoses and in tank strainer. You never said how this came about?

Sounds to me like your slow jets or passage ways are still clogged. I agree with MH on this. Check the pilot jets, they provide fuel from zero throttle (just off idle) to roughly 1/4 throttle. Keep us informed as we all are still learning Ride Safe Roadog

Could be as simple as an "enrichener" cable adjustment.......
Cables stretch over time, or may be not even be adjusted correctly, and your enrichener lever isn't opening to full strength? Just a thought......???
Does this happen all the time? Or just on a cold startup?
