Ok so I went riding today did about a hundred and twenty miles to bike did great. I pulled into the national cemetery in Sarasota County made a loop around everything was still going fine. All the sudden my bike starts making a terrible squeaking grinding noise from the rear. Is my final drive went out? Looking at taking it to the shop on a trailer any hot ideas.

UPDATE...... went to Grumpys  today and it was the skinny bearing that was shot.   Thanks to Grumpy the bike is all serviced and up and running right!

Probably a left rear wheel bearing (maybe the right)..... or the Ujoint (not in rear, behind sidecover).

Probably not the rear end went out.

I'm with the wheel bearing. BUT while you have er down have a good look see at EVERYTHING. P-cup U-joint splines AND Whoever does the repairs/fix make cursed SURE they follow They SEQUENCE on reassembly. RIDE SAFE.

Wow sorry for the bad luck you had. Once you get it apart and determine what failed, please give us an update. I'm curious how many miles are on your bike to have something go out like that. Good luck and let us know what you learn.

If you're still in Florida, post this on the Fla. board. We have some really good mechanics in the area, I'd hesitate to use a dealer these days since most of their people don't want to or know how to work on these bikes. I agree, it sounds like a wheel bearing may be going on you. Get the rear off the ground and spin it, if it's as bad as you say....it will sound off for you when spun. How many miles on the bike and when was the last time the rear end was serviced and by whom. This would be a good time to do the double row bearing mod to the left side if that turns out to be the problem.

47K isn't much to be the bearings, but if it's that, hopefully no damage was done to your wheel hub.  let us know what you learn.  if you choose to go with a Honda shop, like was mentioned you have to stay on top of who's actually doing the work, as the techs don't get training on 1500 valks anymore.

The SUDDEN noise says U joint to me. I replaced a friend's at about that mileage. Mine was replaced at 92K just for preventative maintenance. Wheel bearings make small noises which get louder with miles.

Just a thought, but the suddenness reminds me of the time I picked up a very small piece of gravel in the brake pads. The rubbing sound on the rotors sounded like the bike was going to come apart any moment! Easy enough to check.

+1 same I thought. Sudden is more often the u-joint. Slowly and one way on a turn, more likely a bearing.

Now nogrey has a thought there. Wait on what we hear back.

My left rear bearing went pretty fast, and from first thumping to crunching/grinding/squalling in about 15 miles.  I had to crunch another about 14 miles to a metric dealer at the least crunchy (least destructive) speed of about 33mph (I was way out in Nowhere WVa).  When the wheel came off, it was losing it's balls.  The bearing pocket was unharmed.  I later did the double row left mod on both bikes at next tire changes.

My U-joint actually lasted a little (not a lot) longer and I made it home (I was not far from home maybe 35 miles, also gimping along delicately on clutch and throttle).  It was also beat up and shredded, and I had to clean a lot of metal dust and filings out of the swing-arm tube.

I could quite happily never do either again.

If the bike is still moving, should not be the splines.

Granted. But now at least you have a good running Valkyrie to escape the other issues that maybe aren't going to end happily Grin
