Well I finally got around to replacing the complete final drive I bought off a member on the VRCC board. He triked out his bike at 20K miles so the parts were like new.

I replaced the pumpkin, drive shaft, universal joint & New Boot, Flange, wheel dampners, all new O rings, greased and lubed and ready for Colorado.

I had one hiccup and it was a royal bitch. The rear caliper stop bolt decided to weld itself into the swing arm  Angry I could not back it out for the life of me. I tried heat and banging and spraying break free and letting it set for awhile.

I finally decided that I was going to cut the bolt off. I had already exhausted all ways to remove it, without going to my stash of TNT  Grin

Had no clue that this bolt was a case hardened steal bolt, only had a small amount of thread that screwed into the swing arm and no threads on the end that goes into the caliper mount. So I said I will just grab the sawzall and make quick time of this, get the wheel off and then worry about backing out the bolt, at least I will have room to work.

Long story short, after going thru 12 sawzall metal blades it finally cut thru  Shocked Now I was clear to back the bolt out. I knew that I was going to need a new one so I ordered one from Partzilla, and I paid next day and still waiting on it.

The bolt from hell did not want to budge, so I heated up a 13mm red hot and Hammered it on to the stripped out 14mm bolt. I let it cool for awhile so the socket would shrink down around it. Then I re heated the back side of the bolt where I sawed it off, and beat the living crap out of it with a punch and small sledge.

Went to the 1/2 inch drive ratchet and finally she broke loose? I have No Freaking idea why this happened, I have all these parts off the bike every 10K miles, which comes pretty quick the way I ride? No Clue, so just waiting on that new bolt which will get anti seize instead of just grease, and I will get to see how tight her ass is now  Cheesy

Never seize is your friend on that bolt, I have encountered a few of those.

I am sure if anyone knows what I am talking about, it's u  Grin The bolt I got from Partzilla actually already had green lock tight on it already? I put anti seize on all of the bolts that were put back.

I was going to tell you that as I was reading the responses. Honda says to replace it every time you take it apart (on a ST1100).  I have many miles, brake pads and tires and have yet to replace one.

A 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF is suppose to be good for rusty bolts. Probably a bit tough to get it to hang in there and do something for that application.

Best stuff I have found is Kano AeroKroil Penetrating Oil Aerosol. This stuff works, when you are rebuilding 60 plus year old outboards it soaks in and breaks through the rust and corrosion.

Bill,
Where do you get your supply of this stuff?  I have a few projects coming up for my Jeep, and I have a feeling WD40 isn't going to be good enough for some of the bolts I will be removing.
Hope all is well.

Sounds good, I will do a search on it, and get some to the house.

I have done work on these bikes for awhile now. I was never more frustrated over something so simple in all the wrenching I have done on these Bikes.

I also need to get a table lift, I am done sitting on the floor wrenching this Phat Gurl !!  crazy2

Yea one more burn out and you would have been in neutral.

And with all the new stainless steel braided lines on the 98, I barely pull the clutch lever!!!  Wow are they nice, brakes are more responsive as well.   Actually got some solo riding in yesterday and this morning!! Windy but nice all in all.

Getting antsy to see that project big blue rig deal that is getting aped!   Easy Rider!
