Here's the story:  I have a '99 Tourer and have a JM CB which has worked perfectly for last 7 or 8 years of my previous '97 Tourer.  I transferred the JM CB to the '99 and have been unable to stop the static on "in-coming" talk on channel 1.  All other channels are static-FREE and out-going transmissions are completely clear !!!--??

I bought and installed a new radio and all the cables etc to the helmet and still have the same problem!!--??  Apparently the problem is not in the radio.

I think the problem may well be with the "installer" (ME) !!

Anyone else ever had this type of problem and how did you cure it??

I forgot to post the following info--I have a picture of the part I need, which is not listed on any OEM parts sheet I can find. The part bolts onto the rear of an Interstate alternator and has a part numberof 0.5 u F + 1.5 UF
250 OVDC
15    69

Anyone have one "laying around" & and willing to part with it??

When I put a cheapo cassette player in my 1974 Honda Civic, I could
"hear the engine" in my stereo (that's how I described it)... someone sent me down
to the auto parts store and to get a "noise suppressor", some kind
of condenser...  it fixed the problem... if you can't find a real Valkyrie one, I wonder if
any old noise suppressor would work...

It is a special part, that is two 'condensers' in one, as shown on the schematic and on page 16-10 of the service manual. Give how it is connected, I suspect the 0.5uF capacitor connects to the regulator terminal, and the 1.5uF cap connects to the rectifier output post. You can get two separate ones, and figure out how to rig them; if you can get one of each value, all the better. Both are there to filter out the high frequency whine that varies with engine rpm.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll check with local dealer and see want they come up with.  I did check the alternator to see if maybe it was failing, as it has 80K on it.  Nope, it's out-put is up to 14.1 at just over idle.  I think I'll call "Pinwall"  and send them a picture of the part and see if they can come up with one.  Still not SURE of just what the actual problem is!

Go to a parts fiche and look at the 88-00 Gold Wing alternator assembly.

The condensor you seek is listed there. I've bought a couple over the years for retrofits.

Don't forget the filter assembly which is part of the fan motor power lead. Both of these used to come with the Valkyrie CB Radio Kit for Standard/Tourer, and the filter itself with the I/S CB kit.

Agree - I'd start cleaning up the ground connections, especially the mounting tab for the condenser. They do fail with heat and time, but fixing grounding issues just costs your time.

When I put the CB on my bike I was looking for that alternator filter. I talked to Ken Heming who works on Valkyrie alternators. He had a filter he sold me. I searched his name and he has a Web site. I converted my Touring to an Interstate so my alternator didn't have the filter.

There was also a filter with the CB that goes inline with the radiator fan. Not sure you would get noise there unless fan is running. I ordered that filter from HDL. 08E95-MBY-10011

If you are going to buy a capacitor, the 0.5uF is referred to as 0.5 microfarad...or 1.5uF is a 1.5 microfarad capacitor...just for info purposes...!!!

Just to let you know: I ordered part # 31108-MN-5-005, which is for a '00 Goldwing.(It looked like the one I have a picture of).  I didn't order the filter for the fan motor. Without that filter, yea i used to get a buzzz when the fan came on, but that was a very rare event, like maybe a a red light. Even then I could turn the squelch up and kill it. With 80K on the bike I plan to replace the brushes at the same time the condenser goes on, even though the alternator is putting out 14.1 at just above idle.

Don't be surprised if all they need is a cleaning. Mine out of an 88' GW with 60K+ miles had about a half life left, but needed cleaning to move freely, as it wasn't making contact any longer.
