Easy things (relatively easy) first.

Are all the plugs going to the dash firmly seated in their receptacles, and are they free of corrosion?

Check these.

Notice any other anomalies with that dash?

You now have two posts about your tach. It's much better to keep all responses on the original so later people can go back and see how it went.

I do know a failing alternator will cause a weak battery, failure to start, and tach trouble.

Before anyone responds, you can delete the other thread and put all additional information here.

Don't know if this is the same as an IS but I wouldn't be surprised. On a std, Honda put the tach on the same circuit as the taillight - to let you know your taillight is out.  Get a short back there which blows the fuse - tach no worky.

The shop owners get the expertise they're willing to pay for.

A good mechanic is an investment (as is a good set of tools) but many dealers think in the near-term and hire cheap.
