Author Topic: Radiator heat shield  (Read 1167 times)

Ive been trying to reinstall the radiator heat shield. Been working on it all day with no luck. I even cut it in half to try that. I'm not sure anymore which is front or back or top or bottom or where it is supposed to go on the frame. There is nothing in the manual at all. Any help?

It's easiest with the carb bank out of the bike or the radiator and fan moved,,, I messed up last time I had the carbs off and assembled out of order. I left it out and have had no adverse problems so far.....

The two dog ear looking corners go down. At both sides slide under the frame and toward the front. The hump at the bottom is what goes over the thermostat housing.

I spent a couple hours once trying but put it in backwards and had the same thought.

I bought my interstate with the heat shield removed by the P/O. When stuck in traffic, or coming down from a high speed run the bike would start to rev up by itself as high as 3000 rpm. I would have to turn her off and wait for her to cool down, before starting up and continuing on my ride. I live in Florida and using a digital thermal thermometer I checked on carb's 1 & 2 and found them to be at about 227' when she would start to rev up. After installing the a heat shield the problem went away. Retesting I found the 2 front carb's to be below 200.
Say what you want but mother Honda felt it needed the shield that's why it's there. I put it on before reinstalling the carb's after I desmoged her. I desmoged her just to get rid of extra vacumm lines and extra plumbing and no other reason.

Keep in mind the next time you feel the urge to pull the carbs, you don't have to pull that heat shield. Just remove one of the engine hangers and slide them out that side. I usually do both hangers, gives more room and less cussing, and the engine isn't going to fall to the ground.

After reading that, I'll put it back in next time I have things apart,,, never checked any temperatures, but hasn't acted up so far.
