This question is for the guys that have fork rebuilding experience please.

My IS was rebuilt first and she rode like a dream afterwards; we used Amsoil 10w.  Recently my standard forks were rebuilt but this time we used Honda 10w oil.  In both cases all wear parts and seals were replaced and the springs were replaced with Progressives.  My standard is so stiff its like riding a jackhammer, I took her out yesterday and felt like I took a beating before the day was over.

I started at the recommended height and have so far removed 2 ounces from both forks with no improvement.

Could there be that much difference in the oil?  Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do to resolve it?

STD has different oz requirements than the I/S. I/S forks also have different damping and compression for the fairing than the std.

I have a std with progressive springs and Amsoil 10w.  was hard as a rock and I put less oil in then the book. finally rides nice after fork seal going bad and less oil. rebuild starts very soon.

I have posted below links before. there is no standard for forks oils like motor oils. Amsoil 10w is a heavier vis than Honda SS8 their 10wt. looking at different charts I'll be mixing amsoil 10w and 5w (cause I have both) 50/50 which should be about 7.5wt close to SS8 vis.

Did you follow the axle tightening sequence? Loosen the pinch bolts hold the front brake and push up and down on the front end tighten the bolts and see what happens.

I had the same problem, switch to ATF minus 2 oz in each fork, rides nice now.

Thanks Flash, do you recall what fork oil you originally used?  I am considering sucking out the Honda oil and switching to Mobil 1 syn ATF.

All fork oil is not the same.

Thanks, I'm fully aware that not all oil is the same, that is why I asked a specific question and asked it to the people on here that have rebuilt a lot of forks so I can get a useful answer.

Apologies.

Let me ask a very specific question.  Does anyone that has fork rebuilding experience have any input if Amsoil and Honda 10W are drastically different in how the forks feel afterwards?

I understand not all oil is the same.  I understand that pinch bolt tightening sequence has nothing to do with how harsh the ride is or could be.  I just want to know if I should suck out the Honda fork oil and put in Amsoil or ATF.

mine were stiffer/harsher with the Amsoil 10wt vs the factory fill.

I went from 15w 10w then ATF the 15 and 10 made the ride harsh.
