1998 Standard

Independence Mo

« on: August 07, 2017, 08:54:38 AM »

This is Phil Dorman with the 99 Standard from Independence Mo.   I'm still trying to get my bike to idle and stop popping on decel.
Recently Bon Shaw and myself pulled the carbs to put new needle seats and while in there I put all new OEM low speed #35 jets but really didn’t need to as mine were not clogged.
New vacuum lines, Intake O-rings all but the Caps which I need to pick up from redeye.   We failed to check the air fuel screw settings when we had the bike apart and I do not know if they’ve have been adjusted or not.
I put on a set of Mark T pipes on last month including cross-over set up and have finally got the header nuts to seat.  I’m fighting popping on decel and it’s driving me crazy and bought one of the stubby tools from redeye to adjust air fuel on bike but have no idea how to do so without burning the hands and wonder if I need to try this in order to stop the popping?  We have addressed everything for vacuum except the vacuum caps but have them sealed pretty well even though they are hard as a rock. Good fuel, new plugs and air filter no known vacuum leaks and headers seated.  Thanks for any help or guidance.  99 Standard with 6600 miles and climbing weekly.  Phil

Let the bike cool. Use your stubby and reseat each idle mixture screw GENTLY. Then turn each one out to 2 1/2. Ride it and see what you get. If still bad go to 2 3/4 out and try again. Each turn out should improve it. As long as there are no leaks. Keep turning out 1/4 at a time. If you get to 3 1/2 you probably need bigger different jets.

I did find last night that all but 2 pilot screws were turned out 3/4 from seating.  I turned them all out 1 3/4 and rode to work today much happier and with little to no popping and much smoother in the 1500 to 2500 rpm range.   I will ride it like this for a few days and then if needed tweak some more..  Thanks for the suggestion.   I did remove the middle intake on each side in order to have more room which made the job much easier..

still have the PAIR valve system? that will make it pop, it dumps more air into the exhaust on decel.

stock setting I believe is 2 3/4. Heck I just pull all my intakes, makes it much easier and only 6 bolts total. Just make sure that oring is good.
