Neutal or 1st gear...???
«

Just wondering...I redid my rear end on my 99CT because I changed out the tire...while reading up and preparing to do all this (first time I have ever done all this), I came across two different suggestions...1) stated to put the bike in 1st gear while removing and installing everything...and 2) suggestion was put bike in Neutral...which one would be easier or are they the same and don't really matter...I had it in 1st gear and I did have a heck of a time putting the rear wheel back on into the pumpkin...Seems it really wouldn't matter to me...!!! ????

Well I've only done it a few times not like these experts but when I put the drive shaft back in to engage the spline in the U-joint I need it to be in first gear and I guess I keep it in gear afterwards when I'm putting the wheel onto the pumpkin but it wouldn't make much difference either way to me for putting the wheel on

I keep it in 1st gear, as TFrank said....makes it easier to engage the driveshaft. At least the engine shaft isn't moving a tad when you're trying to engage it. To do that I usually will put the flange into the final just to give me something to grab onto while turning the driveshaft a bit to engage the engine output spline. Once it's in place, I pull the flange and insert into the wheel, then put the wheel in place in the final drive. I usually will insert the axle before ever getting the wheel into the final, helps hold the wheel up so you have both hands free. And, since I only have the wheel a couple inches off the floor I also will use a short piece of 2x4 as a fulcrum, lay a 30" +/- of 1x3 on it and under the tire. Lift the wheel up in the general area of the final drive and hold the 30" 1x3 down with your knee. Leaves both hands free to wiggle the wheel into place.
