The bracket the holds the tab for the side cover closest to the fork has been enlarged for some reason.  This is on a 99 interstate.  This is the same bracket that the seat lock mounts to.   It looks like this bracket is only held by a single bolt on both sides.  Does anyone know what the bracket is called and where a replacement might be gotten?

I have no idea what you're talking about.  Closest to the fork? Only sid ed covers I know of are the 2 that go with the center piece meathead posted.

The black plastic thing in the picture is a "center cover", if that is
what you need, it is part number: 83700-MZ0-000ZC ...

It is on the seat page in the fiche...

It seems to still be available, if it is it is around $225  Shocked ...

You should be able to get a good used one a lot cheaper. Here in our classifieds, eBay, Pinwall , etc.

Yeah, I hate taking off the center cover, it is hard to get at even
with medium sized hands... since all three of those plastic
covers co$t a ton of money, I'm always paranoid about breaking
a tab or something...

EDIT: there's some black ones on ebay right now, a whole set (all three
covers) for $250, all the way down to a dirty-but-unbroken black center
cover for $25...

You might just need the rubber grommet that goes in the hole for the plastic cover to press into.

Post a picture of the "enlarging" you speak of.  I don't think anyone understands what you are talking about

I'm guessing one of the tabs is broken. I have one on my I/S. I have just used a grommet to hold it in place. 50k and no problem.

You are correct. It is the enter cover.  Everyone that is listed on eBay suffers from the the same problem, one or both of the tabs that hold the side cover are broken.  Seems to be a common problem.

It is. There are a few easy fixes. Some use Velcro. Some zip ties. I have a rubber grommet that holds it well.

It is very easy to break those tabs if you think they work like a hinge.  They don't.  Coming up on 16 years and a dozen or so bikes and never broke one yet

The owner's manual has explicit instructions for removing the side covers.
I'm not the least embarrassed to take off my seat and pull out the
manual if I need to take the covers off and haven't done it recently.

I wish the former owner had read that.  I'll get her fixed up.  Least the pigeon bombs came off ease enough.

Alright, I'll bite.  The WHAT??

I broke one 18 years ago and used velcro to hold it on.  Rode that bike today and the velcro is still doing it's thing.

I bought a bike that the PO did the zip tie thru drilled holes. tickedoff  On Chrome covers also. tickedoff tickedoff Angry

The break was in the middle cover, so I made small "L" brackets and JBWelded them in place and they work great.

You are more forgiving than I. If I went to buy a bike and it had pigeon crap on it, I'm pretty sure I'd be going the other direction. Hopefully you have no more hidden treasures.  Smiley
