ORANGE PARK, Fla. — Authorities say they have not identified a child's body they found Wednesday in a landfill while searching for a missing 7-year-old girl. Family members were hopeful the girl is still alive, though neighbors in the girl's community feared the worst.

The partially covered body of the child was found in a Georgia landfill near the Florida state line, after investigators followed garbage trucks leaving from the neighborhood where Somer Thompson disappeared Monday.

Sheriff Rick Beseler said investigators searched through 100 tons of garbage before finding the body. He first said the body was female, then corrected himself to say he could not confirm the gender.

Few other details about the body, such as a possible cause of death, were released. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation planned an autopsy Thursday.

Somer vanished on her mile-long walk home from school Monday in Orange Park. She was squabbling with another child, and her sister told her to stop. The girl got upset, walked ahead of the group and wasn't seen again.

The girl's aunt, Laura Holt, said family members were going through an agonizing wait to find out whose body was found.

"I'm still holding out hope this is not Somer," Holt said Wednesday night, her voice cracking.

Earlier, the girl's father, Sam Thompson, who lives in Graham, N.C., pleaded for her safe return. Holt is his sister.

"Somer, your daddy Sam loves you unconditionally. Stay strong and don't give up the fight or the hope that we're going to be a family again. I love you," he said before authorities revealed they had found the body.

That news was an awful blow to her brother, Holt said. He nearly had a breakdown not long after, when someone claiming to be part of the search team in Florida told him they had positively identified the child as his daughter because of a birthmark. The claim was quickly found to be false after a call to the sheriff, she said.

"My brother just fell apart. He thought he was having a heart attack," she said. Thompson is now staying at an undisclosed family member's home to get away from the "circus" in front of his house.

Orange Park is a suburb of Jacksonville just south of Jacksonville Naval Air Station. The area where the girl disappeared is a heavily populated residential area with homes, apartment complexes and condominiums.

A crowd of about 150 people, some crying, gathered across the street from Somer's home, many clutching their children tightly. Others placed flowers under a tree.

"We are all devastated," said Tonya Jennings, a grandmother who lived three doors away and often saw the girl and her siblings come home from school. "I knew her."

Jennings, 61, was with her two granddaughters, Nina Guitierez, 9, and Aria Michaels, 8, who attend Grove Park Elementary School with Somer.

"We will need to be more vigilant. There are pedophiles everywhere in the area," she said.

John Latavia, 43, said his children attended school with Somer.

"All we can do is pray and come together," he said.

If the person who did this has been convicted of the same type of crime before and gotten back out on the streets then that judge needs to share a cell with “Leroy” and the guy that did it needs to have his hair set on fire from inside as he learns about “electron flow”.

Here's a link to a story involving a man and an 18-month old baby.  I wish our justice system allowed us to administer real justice to animals like this.

They just said the birthmark of the found body matches the missing girls birthmark, although they decline to say it is her.  What a shame.  Whoever did this, or any similar crime, needs to fry.
And, as mentioned above, if the perp has been thru the system before, whoever let them go should share their fate.  I am tired of bleeding heart liberal judges letting child molesters go free, then saying it is not the judges fault when they do it again, and again, and again.

Joe: For the one child missing, there's hundreds who have come to mourn and pray together. The good folks still have a leg up on all the bad guys out there. Let's hope they find the person who did this.

I would think that sometimes it's worth it. If someone did that to my daughter I'm pretty sure prison wouldn't scare me.

I'd think it would depend on how badly the rest of you're family needed you. As in, are the other kids grown and self-supporting? Will the wife be OK? If not, then if and when he gets out would be a good time for a face to face.

I just can't understand how such evil can exist. We as a nation are " Too Civilized ". It amazes me that when he is caught he will have " rights "??   This scum dosen't deserve to see the inside of a jail cell or a court room!! He should be turned over to her family to do with as they please! But you can be confident that she is in a better place and when he is locked up the boys already there will more than likely make short work of him, even the inmates know what needs to be done with this lowlife!!!

We have the same problems here....the legal system gets so wrapped up in making and enforcing laws....and lawyers get rich doing it....that we loose sight of the purpose sometimes and all the lawyers and judges think of is winning and loosing.  Its very frustrating when murderers get lighter sentences than some petty non violent offences and the criminals have so many rights that good citizens have to bite the bullet too many times to avoid violating them dirtbags those rights.

In too many instances we have some liberal "Vermont minded" judge to thank for this.  If they find this person, there is a very good chance that he was previously "rehabilitated" for pedophilia and depending on where the offense occurred and the judge, may not have even served prison time.

Joe,
I know this hits personally for you.
About 20 years ago we had a small girl disappear in my town. She was the same age as my middle son, and in fact they were in the same class. She was found by a dumpster in the next town. Everyone strongly believes it was one or both parents involved, but not enough evidence on mother. Step-father was convicted but set free a year later during a re-trial.
Too many mistakes were made, and we never had such of a major crime, so they both walk free.
Parents changed name, moved to another town and go about life like nothing happened.
There was even a movie made, I believe it was "Gone in the Night" about it.
My feelings about anyone that would harm a child are un-printable here, and no punishment great enough.

Every morning I drop my kids off at the door to the school and either my wife or I pick them up.   Every time I read or hear about one of these truly Sad stories it just further justifies the daily drop off and pick up.   20-30 years ago this would have been unheard of.   I know my brothers and I walked to school many a day, never a worry from our parents.   I wish we lived in a world where it was a no brainer to allow young children the freedom to walk or ride to schools or playgrounds, but sadly, those days are gone.

My prayers are with the family and friends at this time.

Seems to me in this case the father needs to sue the police department for not doing their job but being paid out of his taxes...

The police are trained for this, he is not (I'm assuming) and yet he caught the jacka$$!

This is exactly the reason I gave up my career with the Fl. Dept of Corrections. I was a release officer for several years and everytime I had to find a place for a child sex convict to live and release that person to the public it made me sick. In Fl there is a Jimmy Ryce Law which allows the state to hold a convict (sex offender) after his sentence expires. It is named after a little boy who was killed by one of these freaks after being released. The problem with the law is it is almost impossible to get the civil commitment to hold them. There is a old prison in Arcadia Fl used to hold them.

tickedoff Electricution, lethal injection, firing squad or hanging would be too good for anyone that would do something like this. The system won't allow the punishment that is deserved and that is a sad thing. These stories make my blood boil!!! I am a very laid back, easygoing person, but there is no excuse for anyone to harm a child and no justice severe enough for anyone who does!!  tickedoff
