hi guys. the other day I was cleaning my 97 bumble bee, getting ready to go to a car/ bike show.
started it, let it warm up a bit, revved it a few times, got my helmet on and headed down the driveway. just as I hit the street I felt it loose power, kinda like the feeling you get when you need to switch to reserve.
I rode it 4 mi to town and back and it never came back to normal. I thought maybe a carb or plug needed to clean itself out or something.
I put new plugs in it 2 yrs ago when I bought it, but I put another set in it this weekend anyway. no difference. my son felt the exhaust, ant the 1st cyl on either side was not getting hot. so, no fuel or spark on them? where to go next?
TIA!

Henry, did you hose it down with water while cleaning?  If do I would check the spark plug well drains and make sure you are not retaining water in the plug wells.

If you didn't get the bike wet, I got nuthin'.

Maybe pull the seat off and put a fan on the bike for some hours.  Hopefully, something wet will dry off.

When I use a hose, it is only on mist (except for the wheels and underside).  When I'm done, I use a Stihl blower on full blast for 10 minutes, then a towel.

#'S 1 & 2 not firing?  Sounds like that coil could be fouled.

Did you wash the bike or get a little aggressive around the coil wires?

You can check the coils by swapping them.  If you have spark on the 3 & 4 coil, swap it with the 1 & 2 coil to check it.

Minimal water when I wash the bikes. Leaf blower or air compressor with a rubber tipped nozzle.  Don't wash a bunch, but use a bunch of quick detailer.  I stay away from the car wash to.

sounds like a plan.

I was only using a squirt bottle to clear up some minor dust and water spots, then finishing up with Honda polish. so it was not doused in water, although I have ridden in heavy rains for hours and it had no ill effect on either of my bikes.

Is it fixed?

um, not yet. working 12 hr days put a kink in wrenching time. I'm assuming I have to pull the tank to switch coils, that takes me awhile.

  Before I pulled the tank, I'd confirm there is no spark to both 1 & 2 and spark to either 3 & 4 or 5 & 6.

I had something like that happen to me, it sounded like you say, running out of gas. I started looking around and found one of the intake vacuum plugs came off. I put a new plug and everything came back to normal.

loose + wire on the coil for 1&2. the boot was over the stem, but the connectors inside were side by side instead of plugged into one another. how does that happen, after 20+ yrs and 60,000+ miles?  ???
I'm stoked its fixed and back to riding!  coolsmiley
