Hearing chatter as I shift into 4th and 5th gear. I also hear it when I pull in the clutch and coast...what am I hearing? Got 33k and the first time I've heard this...

Could be clutch.

First check that the clutch res. Is clean.  Have you changed fluid recently?  If that doesnt clear it up i would next look at the clutch slave cylinder to make sure it isnt causing an issue.

What year, and model?

Where are you located ? As there may be someone who has worked in these issues close to you.  Update location on your profile.

Generally the clutch will slip when accelerating in 4th and 5th.  Most often in 97

i have replaced my clutch.

Bleed it and see what shakes out.  What RPMS you shifting at for 4th and 5th? Don't use shift points in the manual,  they are too low. Does the bike do it when it not up to temp?

If you're shifting to those gears at a low speed, it could simply be driveline slop coming from worn dampers in the rear wheel. It becomes more noticeable at low speed/high gear.

Do you feel it in the shifter when changing gears?

Most likely, you have a drivetrain issue.

You're going to have to inspect it starting at one end or the other. Undecided

I'd do as John says and check out the rear drive dampers first.

I lost my clutch (PLATE B, CLUTCH 22322-MZ0-000 $50.29) plate at around 36K.  That was 80K ago.  Never had any issue with a pumpkin.

I have a '98 Standard...I have not changed the fluid since I bought the bike. I really appreciate all the good info.
