My 99 I/S just rolled over 14,000mi found a small puddle of antifreeze. It is coming from the lower head gasket next to the #2 exhaust port is this a common issue ? Appears to be a coolant crossover port. How bad of a job is it to change head gaskets?

Most likely NOT the head gasket. There are water pipes with O-rings around and the thermostat housing. Leaks migrate and fool ya

Agree with Chrisj. Usually a loose radiator hose clamp on the lower end of the upper radiator hose where it is connected to the thermostat housing. Tighten the clamp and leak is stopped.

When I did mine, I used a 1/4" ratchet and long 1/4" extension, universal and socket. i mixsed up some epoxy glue and glued the extension, universal and socket together. Did not want anything to fall into areas I cannot get to. Later, it was easy to take them apart.

I double checked the leak it is definitely the head gasket . Just another off season project to add to my list. I put some stop leak in for now stopped the leak quick but still going to replace them this winter. any tips for changing the head gaskets?

Just curious, what method was used to determine it was the head gasket. These engines are pretty bullet proof so with only 14k on it a head gasket would have to have been caused by another issue. The #2 is the front cylinder on the left and that's where you'll usually find the leaks the other guys spoke of, the coolant will often dribble down along that area especially if it's one of the coolant tubes on top of the motor. If you do in fact have to pull the head, first set the engine on #1 TDC first and line up all the timing marks on the two belt pulleys relative to the marks on the casing.

I'd save yourself some trouble and listen to John. It's POSSIBLE it's the head gasket, but I'd put my money on a leak elsewhere.

And I (personally ) wouldn't run stop leak in this bike unless it was an emergency. Stand a fair chance of plugging the radiator not to mention small water passages. Maybe it's OK but I would avoid it and find the problem.

Just like everyone else said, every valk I have owned has done this once in its life, take the top radiator bolt out and you can pull the radiator out far enough to see where the upper radiator hose attaches to the thermostat housing, its usually that clamp, take your 1/4 drive ratchet, extensions and an 8mm and tighten that clamp a little. You never here about head gaskets going bad, good luck and keep us posted.

Happy you found the trouble...I for one would have used some radiator die added to my radiator and used a black light to find the source before I ever tried to remove the head gaskets and would never use stop leak on my bike...IMO...!!!
