Rear Brake Pads
«

I just got back from a 2,000 mi. trip. Twice while braking hard on the trip the rear tire locked up on me. Dry ground, rear tire in good shape. This afternoon I pulled the pads. There is lots of pad left but they are very pitted and some of the edges are broken off. The rotor is also much rougher than either of the front ones. There is lots of brake dust on the wheel and caliper but I can't find anything wet that would indicate fluid leak. Bike is an 03 standard with 14k. First question: what could cause this and second: should I go back with oem pads or are there better options? OK a third question: do you turn these rotors or just change pads until you need a new one?

You didn't happen to touch (with spit on your fingers) your rotor when this happened, did
you? A sizzle might have been telling...
Anywho, I think you need to insure that your caliper is in good shape...

With the wheel locking up I would check out the caliper. The pistons can get a ring of build-up on them. When they try and retract into the bore they hang. That will leave pressure on your pads causing them to drag and/or the piston stick while extended.

when you say hard braking........are you standing on the rear, relying on that brake more than the fronts?
