I'm looking at buying a 2001 standard with 60K mi. on her. She looks to be well kept. A one owner, from a dealership. They are offering the $50 deductable, 3 year, Zurich service plan with the bike for $1290. Does anyone have knowledge or opinion r/t the plan or also buying a Valk with 60K on it?
Thanks-

Check the rear wheel drive splines and the pinion joint. If they are good, you likely have a machine there that's ready for a 100,000 more miles easy. Valks are pretty solid. I've no exerience with "Zurich" but that seems a tad pricy. If you even a little handy with tools, service and maintenance of the Valk is not that big of a problem.

A well maintained Valk with 60k should provide many more miles of generally trouble free riding. The engines routinely get over 200k miles without trouble. The rear wheel bearings are probably considered the most troublesome things on the bike. Rear wheel/drive line maintenance is the key to many future enjoyable miles. A lot of people in this club have become better Valk mechanics than you'll find at any dealership!!! Actually than at most dealerships. Many horror stories of how the dealer mechanics screw up easy maintenance items.
I don't know anything about the Zurich plan. What does it cover? Where are you located?

If (a) you don't do your own maintenance, (b) use a dealer for scheduled maintenance, (c) ride 5000+ miles per year, and (d) it's a true "maintenance" plan covering all scheduled maintenance, it's probably worth it. Up here in the pricey Seattle area, a 16,000 mile scheduled maintenance can run over $1000.

Unfortunately it's not a maintenance plan. The routines will be mine. This would really just cover any complex or serious mechanical breakdowns or malfunctions. I guess to me it's kind of hedging my bets against a 60k mi bike breaking down in a major way. From what I've heard here, maybe I shouldn't be so concerned about the mileage alone. I've generally ridden sport bikes and if I were looking at say a gixxer or a cbr with 60 on it -- well, I probably woudn't be even considering it. And there's also the fact that right now if I spend 5 to 7k bucks on a bike I'm done spending bike money for a while. I really couldn't afford to get any major work done for some time and I'm no mechanic beyond pretty basic stuff.

Makes a difference where you're located. There may be a good Valk mechanic in this club that could help you out if you ended up needing some help/work done. There are some great people in this club always willing a fellow Valker!
Seems to me you could get a lot of wrenching done for $1300.

Yeah right. I'm begining to think that from what I've been reading, 60k on the Valk may not be enough of a concern by itself to cause me to spend $1300 more for a 3 year security blanket.

If this new to you bike is in halfways decent shape to begin with, you won't spend 1300 dollars on the kind of maintenance it will need. Lube the proper stuff when you change tires, keep the oil changed, and ride. I have had my Interstate for three years and haven't put 300.00 in repairs the whole time. Just tires, brakes, and bearings the whole time. The rest just normal oil changes and fluids.

I would save my money. Sounds like the things it covers are not apt to go bad, and id does not cover normal stuff. That kind of money would buy a LOT of BLING!!
