My recent purchase of a '99 Interstate has blue/gold pipe discoloration (55,000mi) and I'm told it's either too lean or too rich.  Can anyone recommend a source for replacement "stock" parts in a kit so I don't have to figure out which/what, gaskets, seals,  O rings, jets, needles, etc. to buy? gold is from idling too long with the choke on.  the oem exhaust is double wall, so to cause discoloration is not easy except with abuse.

really u have nothing to do, except ride it after using all of the correct fluids and maybe a new OEM air filter only.   only use regular gasoline. check your plugs, maybe change them out.  then ride 2-3k miles keeping tabs on mpg 33-37, normal range on avg.

Duz it idle on It's own when fully warmed up? When warmed up and go to throttle W F O duz it miss? In 2nd or 3d gear stay W F O til you hit the chip. Did it miss while held W F O? Has the air filter ever been changed to your knowledge? How long did it sit before you got her? Others WILL chime in but we are in fact-Curious!  coolsmiley RIDE SAFE.

I have a 99 IS.  This time of year I run a couple tanks of gas with Seafoam in it to keep the carbs healthy.

much better modern fuel additives (using PEA technology) and lower cost, than sf avail today, to keep the carbs and intake valves clean. sf uses pale oil a low temp oil which gums up the back of the intake valves.

I can't say what the PO did as to idle, don't know about air filter, but I run only regular, plugs were supposedly changed at 45,000mi.  If I recall,  my mileage is a little less--maybe 30-35.

Idles ok except has a "lope"  it DOES run GREAT WFO!  Don't know about the a.f. or how long it sat (but in talking to the PO it MIGHT have sat a year).  I have two other "big bikes", a DL1000 and a KTM 990 Adventure and considering this is 300+ lbs more weight, I have to say I'm impressed!

OK, so you guys are saying I don't need to re-build the carbs?  I want to clean the pipes and shine them up but would like to be sure the discoloration doesn't come back first.  I looked at a pic which, on the starbord side, the fore and aft pipes look gold and the center one is blue.  (any ideas why?) See pic

I DID run a bottle of the Cheveron stuff (Techron)??  BTW, I just bought another Tourer about 3 weeks ago.  It too runs great but the pipes are pretty.  OEM except was told the piggys were cut and has "3 into 3 tips".

As long as I'm showing pictures, here's my other one!

I am EXTREMELY PROUD of BOT H of these!!!  This makes my bike stable total of 5 with the KTM 990 Adventure, DL1000 and my KTM 450 EXC.  Back in mid August, while on the TAT on my KTM 990 I fell in Oklahoma on a gravel road and broke my leg.  Just now getting back into riding!!!

A year ago I didn't know what a Valkyrie was until I saw/rode one with a friend.  I was hooked, bought the Interstate last fall, then this Tourer just a few weeks ago.  Unfortunately around the Fourth, I laid it down in front of a guy that turned left in front of me.  Scraped up the faring and right side case.  Should get the body parts back in a week or so and have my fingers crossed that it looks EXACTLY like it should! cooldude

I unloaded off of my I/S August of 16 and my left ankle bore the brunt of the injuries-read broken. IF I play nice with the throttle-don't launch too often-And I keep the revs below 3 G while in 5th I can see middle 30s to high of 38 M P G as I stated IF I play nice!  Roll Eyes In fact just pulled out todays fuel receipt and doin the math showed 34.2. And I wuz NOT tryin fer fuel mileage. I wuz just Enjoyin the day.  cooldude My Brother-da prez-on his Tourer/Standard has seen middle 40s and when I ride with him I stay in the mid 30s. But as others have sated and I'll add to that list-didn't buy her for miles per gallon-instead I got her for Smiles per gallon!  coolsmiley RIDE SAFE.

Thanks for the input guys!  Just want to be sure (from the people that know) the opinion is that I do NOT need to mess with the carbs?  It's only a case of idling too long with the choke on?
See photo of the interstate....Why is the center pipe blue and the other two gold??  Doesn't that indicate a considerable temperature difference between them?
Thanks,

If it idles well and doesn't miss through the rpm range, and your fuel mileage is mid 30's and up. The only thing I would do is make sure all fluids are good and maybe sync the carbs and ride it like you stole it.
Everyone will have different opinions.
My IS has only 48k on it and only had 8 on it when I bought it and the header pipes are discolor end also (but runs great) my Bee has over 100k and pipes look almost new ( I bought this bike new) so go figure.
The discoloration doesn't clean up easy. You could use VHT paint and paint them silver. Some here are done it with good results.
