Need help on Interstate saddlebag assembly

Well the painter did an excellent job on matching the green and silver on my '99 IS.  However, he handed me the parts and said he didn't re-attach the hardware, afraid he might scratch the new paint.  I think they tried and didn't keep track of all the pieces and now I have spent hours trying different combinations to no avail.  I'd be grateful if someone with an IS could measure the front and rear cables.  I ordered a front and rear, the front being about 6 1/4" but will NOT allow me to put the top in the proper position.  The package had a hole in it and I'm suspicious that it's not correct. The lid will hang down on the side but the front cable is too short to allow me to raise the lid enough and hook it on the front hardware.

The front cable on my 99 I/S is 6 1/4 as near as I can tell. It is connected the inboard bolt on the lid latch and to the outboard bolt on the bag latch. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure this helps, but when I had to rebuild my IS bag lid and hardware, I had to actually put the lid sideways down inside the saddlebag to get the shorter cable attached. A headband LED lite was very useful.

This schematic is a nightmare to follow, but it's all there is.  (and to track down all parts needed)

I know one cable is longer than the other, but it's too late and cold to go out now and look.

Thanks guys!  Since I posted, I got a parts supplier to go measure the front cable and yes, we all get about 6 1/4".  I don't understand why I am unable to get the front to pull out enough to engage the front clip to the bag.   Both of the cables attach to their own dedicated spot in the lid, right??  My bag attachment point is outboard at the front and the lid is inboard.  My painter had "lost" item # 27.

And yes, I've been looking at the same schematic and parts list (from Partzilla and BikBandit).  But you need to install by the "feel" method since it's so difficult to see!

No help at this point but.......you should have taken them apart yourself before sending to painter...I did and had no problems putting them back together.

If I remember right, (I believe another post also mentioned it) the cables on the front side attach to the screws that hold the latch onto the lower parts of the bag, not sure if the top  part mounts there also or not. ?

If I remember right, (I believe another post also mentioned it) the cables on the front side attach to the screws that hold the latch onto the lower parts of the bag, not sure if the top  part mounts there also or not. ?

The front cable mount is a backing plate under the bag portion of the latch and according to the schematics it's oriented to hold the cable on the outboard side.  The lid has two threaded holes that should hold the cable bracket.  I thought the painter might have reversed the cables since it appears one is short (about 6 1/4") and the other is longer.   I was wondering if maybe the front cable attaches to the lid under the spring "bumper"?  My inability to put this thing together is incredibly frustrating!  I have a mechanical aptitude in the 99% and my former job involved supervising millwrights aligning turbines and generators within .001".  I've taken apart and rebuilt automatic transmissions, engines, automobiles and motorcycles and this little thing has me STUMPED!!

Well, Attic Rat and Houdini know and now I see the pictures but I FINALLY GOT IT!!!  Eureka!!!  all this time I've been trying to attach the cables to the bosses in the lid and the front was too short.    I took a different approach and attached the "short" 1 1/4" cable under the lid latch mechanism and it WORKED!!  (As in Houdini's pictures).  The rear cable attaches to the boss in the lid, and there's another boss toward the front.  WHAT THE H IS IT FOR???  I'm now thinking Honda was going to use it with a longer cable but decided to use a short cable and use the front attachment points.  Maybe I ought to go back to turbines & generators and turn my Valks over to an experienced mechanic??   Anyway, thanks for all the input and especially to Houdini!  Wouldn't you know, here in Canton, GA, there's still snow on the ground so now I can't ride. (unless I crank up my 450 EXC KTM.)

that is for the tourer hinge setup. cable stops it from flipping forward too far when opened.  I had the same problem figuring out how it went together. the cables weren't installed when I bought the bike
