Headed out on our weekly coffee run,  out in the flat isolated delta farm land, we ran across a yellow line painted across both  lanes of asphalt.  turning around to investigate,  it became clear from the huge amounts of rubber laid down, this was the local area drag strip.  There was only six of us, so we paired off willy nilly and gave it a go.  I paired my i/s with the above mentioned GW and away we went. At the triple digit mark, he was about 30 feet ahead and didn't seem to be getting further ahead.....we came to our senses and resumed our sedate pace to the local Starbucks.

I was surprised there was only that much difference, especially since i  run a 205-65 in the rear.....this is a bit larger in diameter than stock and thus will slow acceleration a bit.  If I  dropped down to a 205-60, I would almost bet it would be a even race.

Any one else have a direct comparison of such a match up?

I think there was probably more involved that your rear tire choice. I think if you lined up 5 times in a row, you would have refined your launch, shift points, etc. I dont know about the weight difference but I am pretty sure the GW is making more hp and definitely more torque...all that said I bet it was fun

My best Bud has the GL1800 and we've raced a few times. It's close but he always wins. That said I have a suspicion that my I/S is only running about 90 percent. hoping to work on that issue this winter.

If I want to race, there's always an assortment of Kawasaki inline four products in the garage from which to choose.  Grin

GL-xx00 bikes are made to cruise and tour, and they're excellent at it. I don't want to replace clutch damper plates on my Valks if I can possibly avoid it so no dragging for me.

Top speed runs, on the other hand...

I've been edged out (never soundly beaten) by 1800 wings a couple times.

However, I've beaten every one of them in the twisties.  (and they weren't all eating ice cream cones at the time)       It's not the bike, it's the rider.

Get yourself a red and black Interstate, never lose again! Oh and use conventional oil!

I'm faster in the twisties on my 1800 wing than on the valks.  By at least 5mph.  You're right - if you beat 1800 wings in the twisties, I'd say you're a better rider. Or at least less sedate than the wingers.  The wing is more capable in every venue I've found.  Except looks.

It was a pretty interesting race. While he was beside me and then pulling away, I could see the differences in gear  rations, rpm, shift points. The Valk has longer legs in each gear due to the higher rev'ing engine, while he was shifting earlier than me, he would drop off some and I would gain, then I would shift and he would gain a bit more.....third gear was pretty much an even match.......still gotta try that with a smaller rear tire.....  Too bad I have about 30K left on this Pirelli P4......
