Forbes: Detroit is nation's 12th safest city

BY MARK W. SMITH
FREE PRESS WEB EDITOR

Just six months after naming Detroit the most dangerous city in the United States, Forbes magazine has placed the Motor City 12th in a list of the nation's safest cities.

The magazine tapped Minneapolis as the nation's safest city, followed by Milwaukee, Portland, Ore., Boston and Seattle.

The latest list places Detroit ahead of Chicago (No. 15), Pittsburgh (No. 18) and Los Angeles (No. 19) on a scale of safety.

Forbes said it looked at four areas of safety to make its list: violent crime statistics from the FBI, workplace death rates, traffic deaths and risk of natural disaster.

Of the 40 cities on the list, Detroit had the worst violent crime rate, but placed fourth safest for workplace deaths, 10th safest for traffic deaths and eighth safest for risk of natural disaster.

In an April report, the magazine cited "a staggering rate of 1,220 violent crimes per 100,000 people" in naming Detroit the least safe city in the country.

On Monday, Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans said homicide rates in Detroit had fallen sharply this year, from 120 in the second quarter of 2009 to 96 in the third quarter.

....Surprise....

I can understand the other three categories, No jobs - no injuries or death. No jobs - no traffic, no deaths, forgot the third

Sounds about right. Los Angeles 19th, OK uglystupid2.Our x Mayor Buddy Cianci has jumped all over the new Mayor about this same issue, Drop in crime rate, He called out Mayor Cicilline and the Providence police dept, Just trying to get some good ratings for their political future, BTW our convicted fellon Buddy C. now has his own morning radio show i listen to sometimes sense  he was released from Prison, He has no mercy for any one that is getting away with the same thing he was charged with.Crime rate is higher here too and with no jobs its just going to get worse.Sorry need to get back to health care sorry about the mention of job loss. Smiley This may sound odd but when Buddy was Mayor this town was a lot cleaner if you can read between the lines  Smiley.

It was just a couple of years ago they were calling mpls. murderapolis. I grew up in south mpls. and i would not feel comfortable walking the streets of the old neighborhood. There was never a gun shot fired in all my eighteen years in the old neighborhood. Now they have devices on poles that can pin point where a shot comes from. And shots are fired every night. I have no idea where they come up with there facts.
