Where'd old times go?

Frisco, TX

« on: January 15, 2018, 03:41:34 AM »

A couple of years ago I suggested to a couple of the members we might try this.  Didn't get much reaction so I assumed it was a 'way out there' suggestion and I never brought it up again.

I see the GL 1800Riders apparently DO have these kinds of get togethers.

This was posted this morning on their forum.  Check this out:

"RTE and Shoot" To Be Announced!

I am trying to plan an RTE and then go to a really nice, supervised outdoor Shooting Range. We did this a couple of years ago and it was a big success. I'm kinda waiting for the weather to cooperate a bit...but will keep everybody posted. RTE will be in Deland, Fl and then off to the gun range just west of Daytona. They do have rifle.....(no fully auto) and about a 20 position handgun range. Very nice, well kept and supervised!

Should be a good time. I will post a date and time as soon as I can find a break in the weather over the next week or two.
"Will definitely need a head count for this RTE "

However, I was thinking more along the lines of a pistol range.  Lot easier to carry on the bike...  BUT,  whatever.

Anybody interested?

I'd be interested.  I have a NIB LCP I need to try out and I also need to run a few more rounds through the DB.

Okay.  Got some info from the Gun Club in Frisco ('Bullet Trap' affiliated).

The range cost includes 1 Double Bulls Eye target.  Each additional Bulls Eye target is $ .50ea.  They do have other targets for different prices.  If we're gonna compete, and maybe put some $$$ in a pot, I think we should standardize the targets and distance so all would be on a level playing field.

They have 30 lanes so us getting on during the week shouldn't be a problem.  However, they do have leagues and ladies nites so should probably call ahead once we determine our needs.

I was told we can have up to 4 people per lane.  You'll notice the add'l folks get a $5 discount so if we wanted to do that (witness each others shooting  Roll Eyes) , we could divi the dollars of the lanes down to $16.25 each plus extra targets.  Smiley

They have a complete snack bar with (what looks to be) approx. seating for 15 - 20 people.

They also have a 'high brow' restaurant with leather seating if you are so inclined.  Cool

Now.  You've got an idea what it costs here.  Some of you may know of another place that's cheaper or that you a member of and maybe can get us a discount?

                     Input please . . .

I've been to Frisco Gun Club before, they have a members first policy and are a very busy range, it is likely there will be waiting for a lane or lanes to open.  I spent over an hour waiting at What-A-Burger last time I went.

This is a very nice range and close to other eating options if we are feeling "low brow".

I didn't ask the manager about reserving lanes but I do understand 'members first' policy.

If we did reserve lanes, we'd have to get a definite commitment from our group...  not sure that's possible.  Undecided

  Any thoughts on other locations?

What day of the week were you there and did they call you at Whataburger when there was an open lane?

+1, count me in.  I might bring Brianna also, she enjoyed taking a gun safety class so I need to give her some range time.   cooldude

A friendly competition sounds fun, I'll just plan on donating my wager to someone.   Embarrassed

I've only been to Frisco Gun Clun and Bullet Trap in Plano, BT is nowhere near as large or as nice as FGC, but on a Wednesday evening was almost deserted.

Saturday morning and they texted a lane will be ready at .....  Now that I think about it, both times I went to FGC was on a Saturday.

I called Bullet Trap in Plano, they don't take reservations but he recommends in order, Monday is their slowest night, Tuesday can get a little busier, and Thursday isn't too bad.  Wednesdays are class nights, avoid Friday and the weekend.

Yes.  Probably need to change the heading from RTE to Show Up ta Shoot and do it during the week.

Clearly, weekends are out of the question.

Let's see how many want to go on a Tuesday around 7:30 to shoot with a 'braggin time afterwards' at a local restaurant.

I wouldn't think we would need more than 1 - 1 1/2 hrs. range time.

Time for others to chime in.

I can only speak for my experience. I know I won't be able to make it on a school night.

I have been with several medium sized (5 - Cool groups to Eagle Gun Range in Lewisville and Quail Creek south of Denton on 35W. I know Quail Creek might be a bit far for most,  it's even a trek for me. Eagle has 2 bays of 15 lanes(?).  One bay is pistol only they other is pistol or rifle (same price so you can bring pistol and rifle).  I usually go on a Saturday. The trick is get there early before they open and ask for a couple lanes together.

Eagle also has a new location in Addison but I've never been. I'm sure it's very similar.

Cost is $20 for first shooter and $15 for each additional on same lane. They also have a good selection of rentals if you choose.

That may be the key right there, someone in line at the opening time to reserve the lane(s).

I'm in for Frisco Gun Club, a maybe for Lewisville, I'd have to have more than one reason to go to Denton.  Saturday morning is fine for any of them, only FGC or BT for a weekday night.

If we go to FGC I may drive and bring a rifle or two, I have a Winchester 30-30 that hasn't been fired in almost 30 years and may bring my first .22 (going on 50 years old) for Brianna to shoot.

FYI, I went to BT last night to check it out, I had to wait about 10 minutes to get a lane, people were coming and going so getting multiple lanes would not be an issue.  It is kinda dark in there and I had a hard time seeing the sights on my .357, both sights are black so I need to paint the front one to make it easier to see in low light.

I miss the good old days when we could drive out into the country and shoot all day and no one cared.

FGC has the same prices, more lanes and a place to get a cup of coffee (and a bite to eat) if needed.

  My vote is FGC.

Can someone, who knows how, put up the 'vote for ______' thingy regarding place, date and time?  ???

FGC has the same prices

Not quite, BT is an all-day pass, FGC is per hour.

  That's not good.

If you have 2 or more sharing a lane, it's liable to get costly.

  Might need to re-consider.  Undecided
