A  guy comes into my shop and needs a real quick fix. He is a regular customer and a nice guy so I hand the Saw to one of the guys in back and say "it just needs a quick adjustment".

In a matter of minutes my tech comes back up front with the saw and says it's good to go.

I hand the saw back to the customer and being a good customer I tell him this ones on me.  He pulls out ten dollars and hands it to the tech and says thanks I really appreciate this and with a smile on his face he heads out the door.

Now for the rant......... and I must add I am laughing as I type this and am in no way mad it just strikes me funny every time this happens.

The tech gets paid by ME to do the quick adjustment and then gets a tip for doing his job that "again" I pay him to do.  Now I am ok with it all because I have a smiling customer and a smiling tech.  I may not be smiling as well but as I said, I'm ok with it.

Maybe if I say "I'm ok with it"  a few more times it will sound more convincing.  Wink  Wink

I have a gentleman's agreement with the lead tech at my local Honda Dealer.  I call and tell him (never the service mgr) what I need (mostly tires), and he tells me when to come in (it might be a week or three).  When I do, I go to the head of the line, and the work gets done while I wait.  I still have to pay high (but not terrible) dealer prices (he shaves what he can for me), and I always give him a $20.  It's worth it to me to be able to do this.  I'm sure not gonna give it to the Honda dealer (who doesn't even want it's people installing car tires, but what they don't know doesn't hurt them).

Though this is a bit different situation from yours, where YOU are the guy who took care of the customer (if not the actual work).

Which reminds me, I need a new front on one bike, and experience has shown me I need to beat the Spring rush, where they have 100s of bikes backed up for service every year.  (That not exactly right size 140 Michelin Commander II radial is a great tire, but I can barely even get 7K on it, so back to my Metzler.)

Everyone's got a different outlook but Even if I have to pay for the job, I have been known to give the Tech a tip..

I am curious Dan....
Was the customer speaking from experience, or maybe relaying an old wives tale ??   crazy2
