Author Topic: Thinking about removing Kury Tranny covers  (Read 1642 times)

I've been looking at valkyrie pics and thinking that the tranny looks ok naked.  Also, the cover on the rights side is bubbling a little, and  on the left, it would make more room to install a Wolo horn.

Can they be removed without any concern. I mean, are the bolts common to other components that will cause trouble?

All I can remember is the Kury tranny covers reuse a couple bolts, and then replace one (or two) with longer ones and a spacer.  Also, I think you have to remove the Honda master cylinder trim cover (or nicer Cobra one) to get one tranny cover to fit, and you'll want to find it and put it back on when the covers come off.

The best thing to do is find the original Kury tranny cover instructions to refresh your recollection on what goes where, before you remove them.  (in your garage, or on line somewhere) (you may find you need to order a couple Honda chrome bolts (chrome flange bolts) and/or a master cylinder cover, before you do the job)

Mine have a couple chrome bubbles at the bolt head area, and I just live with it.  

I just took a quick look at the Kuryakyn site, and could not find a button for install instructions (which doesn't mean they aren't there) (usually a PDF adobe acrobat file, you'll want to print out and take out to the bike).  A call or email to Kury, may get them for you,if you can't find them on line yourself.

I prefer the look without tranny covers, as they draw attention from the beautiful chrome engine (i.e. carbs, intakes, valve covers, headers).  The tranny covers tend to make the engine/transmission into one big blob of chrome, which doesn't appeal to me.  To my eye, it makes no sense to chrome things that are not that attractive in form, but rather those things should be blacked out to make them disappear.  I've never understood the appeal of things like chrome or stainless brake lines, Wolo horns, edging on gas tank seams and fenders, and side covers.

I have Valkyries with chrome tranny cover, left bare, and one with blacked out tranny.  The black really makes the chrome elsewhere stand out.

I have Wolo horns mounted on both sides of my Interstate which has the covers.

I also have Wolo horns mounted on both sides of my standard but they are forward, just aft of radiator so those covers are not relevant. 

I can do pix tomorrow if you want.

And yes, I said both sides.  I have both the Bad Boy and the Big Bad Max.  SIZE MATTERS!!

So here are some pix of my Wolo installs.  Sorry they are not much to brag about. 

The standard has a new home now so this is all I can do.  Buy me a beer I can probably do some added pix for the Interstate.

This is the installed view on right of the standard.  Tried some closeups.  I used angle aluminum and mounted to the hole where the OEM used to be.





This is the left.  Again, angle aluminum using an existing bolt.




On the Interstate right side I used an empty existing hole on the engine mount below the ignition switch.  I used a piece of stainless I had and bent into a Z shape.  If there were no transmission covers I could have pushed this in tighter to centerline.  Note this is the Big Bad Max and the horn outlet is on bottom where the Big Boy outlet faces out the side.  As mounted it just touches my leg but not enough to annoy me.




On the left side I used another piece of stainless bent in a Z shape and an existing bolt in the engine mount.  I pulled the bolt (5mm dia?) and bought one that was longer to ensure full thread engagement with the horn mount and the ground wire added.





I used both Wolo relays and each has its own fuse.  I also bought some shorter bolts as the Wolo ones were too long.  I disconnected and removed the OEM horn and extended that harness under the seat to the new relay trigger connections.

I tried loosening a bolt on the right side. It was hard to unscrew. I got it out about 1/4" and it started to go out of round....  I can't describe it any better. Like as it were cross threaded but that would happen on the way in, not out-- right? Anyway, not knowing what was on the other side, I screwed it back in and it seated good.  Is there anything that the bolts double as, meaning, do they hold something on from the back.  I hate to think I need a mechanic to remove the chrome covers.

Gottem off and ordered a cover for the reservoir. Tranny whine is reduced to a tolerable level.
