Las Vegas got robbed of a game 7 last night. It was a terrible call that resulted in the Knights going up 3-0 to down 4-3 over the penalty.

Took me a minute to figure out what you were talking about, the only Golden Knights I'm familiar with is the US Army parachuting team...

Sorry, John. It was a simple 2 minute minor cross check that they called as a 5 minute major because they didn’t see what actually happened. Gave San Jose a man advantage for 5 minutes, which they scorched the Knights for 4 goals. It’s one of those dumb rules where they aren’t allowed to use replay to see what happened.

Watched the video. Thought the call was justified. Should have been against Stastny.

From the article...

Eakin cross-checking Pavelski to his chest, then Pavelski stumbling backward and then being knocked to the ice by Paul Stastny.

That is what happened. Except Stastny drilled him into the ice when Pavelski was in a compromised position from Eakin's cross-check.

This wasn't some odd chance occurrence, it is obvious it was deliberate on Stastny's part.

Had Pavelski gone down on his own from the initial cross check, nothing likely would have been called.
It's Hockey.

There is no penalty in hockey for knocking someone to the ice. If that were the case they would need to reverse the bench a penalty box seating.

Cross Checking

Rule 59.3 Major Penalty -  A Major Penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, based on the severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player who "cross checks" an opponent. (See Rule 59.9)

This also requires the assessment of Rule 59.5. Game Misconduct.

Generally the standard that gets it to a Major Penalty, at least in other leagues, is if it results in an injury. I'm certain this is a guideline for the NHL as well.

This did.

The injury was the result of the initial cross check.

That makes it a major penalty.

Had there not been a tag team on the hit, it probably would have not warranted anything at all. But it did. It resulted in an injury. The cross check started it.

The injury resulted from Pavelski) being off balance, knocked down by Stasty. It should have been a 2 minute minor on Eakins. I think 9 of 10 refs would agree.

The cross check could have been a 2 min minor. But really that cross check, more of a push, happens in the face off circle all the time as players are fighting for position, and would rarely be called in a game 7. Him being off balance and the follow up push, not a penalty, IMO, is what hurt him.

Unfortunate flukey series of events. But dang, what a game it was. And the play by play by Gord Miller, one of the best in the business, was amazing. Noting compares to playoff hockey.  cooldude

It was a hell of a game ! Seen several good ones here in the first round. Shaping up to be a good playoffs.  cooldude (I agree, most refs wouldn’t have even called the cross check on the face off in game 7 or any game) oh well, the Knights have nothing to be ashamed of, they are a good team.

OTOH - the Carolina Hurricanes came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Washington Capitals - I saw their first goal (Capitals powerplay) and the Canes won the playoff 4-3. On to the next round...

I would have given Stastny a double minor for interference and drawing blood; no crosscheck on Eakin as it was just two guys coming up after the draw (won by Pavelski).  The puck came back to the point man (Burns) and Stastny ran over Pavelski (who was totally off balance with one skate off the ice and falling backward) while coming out of the circle to block Burns' shot.

In hockey reality, there was no penalty, but the refs had to call something or the game would have been delayed further with the ice being covered with garbage from the San Jose faithful.  They were screwed no matter which way they went with call/no call.

Still, Vegas gave up four big ones and there is no excuse for that on the NHL level to cave in that badly.
After 3 they should have considered pulling Fleury or taking a time out after the two quick ones.

Pavelski was pushed back by the crosscheck, lost his balance, then was dumped when Statstny ran through him and cartwheeled him further with force to the ice.  Tough play, but they had to call something.  Bang-bang play in less than a second and they didn't get it right, but hockey has always been that quick.  Tough loss for Las Vegas.

Those referees will not be officiating in the next round, but I look for them in the semis or finals again.

The NHL Office of Player Safety has not issued any statement or reviews of the play as I understand and so the matter is closed, I believe.

Go Avalanche!!!  MacKinnon is a horse and they just might upset San Jose if the hockey gods smile down in their favor...and Grubauer has his horseshoe remain firmly planted between his cheeks. coolsmiley

I was typing when you posted what I was going to say.

I have watched and played hockey all my life, seen many a bad call that has altered a game but the reality on this one is exactly as the quote above except for pulling Fluery as he was screened in a major way which makes you wonder where the heck did the D go? These guys practice being short handed all the time and know what to do. Even if you have a lousy penalty kill, this shouldn't have happen.

All those decisions during the major were the responsibility of the entire coaching staff on the bench, but ultimately Gallant's.
I was pulling for Las Vegas as I thought that the Avalanche would match up better against them than San Jose.

The league office issued an apology to the Knights admitting that the call on the ice was incorrect. The NHL asked the organization if they would be willing to support video scrutiny of those types of calls in the future.  Good move from the league to address the controversy immediately (way different from back in the old times).

Bad calls are made every day by officials on the field, court, pitch, ice, diamond, etc.  Sometimes the officials determine the outcome of contests but don't really want to be a major factor in the final score.

Hell, I remember when hockey first put goal judges in plexiglass boxes because they were being attacked/garbaged by fans for either turning on the goal light too early or too late (that was somethin')!

Nowadays there are no more donnybrooks on the ice and in the stands like there were in the 50's and 60's; not as much fun, but overall much better for the game, (Sunday night, maybe 1956, original AHL game between the Providence Reds and the Springfield Indians when the trainers were going at it too).
 Ahh, Old time hockey. smitten

Yes, most times there is one team that is better than the other, but because of a bounce, a deflection, a screen, a breakaway, a goalie out of position, a key penalty, an injury, etc., etc.; the better team may be at a disadvantage and the lesser team catches a break. Goal.
What should have ended in 5 or 6 games goes to 7.

Now, anything may happen in a game 7; that's what makes the anticipation thick...could be tight...could be a blowout.  The handshake line says it all at the end. cooldude

Avs vs Sharks, Game 1 tonight in San Jose.  Sweet.

Avs overwhelmed by the Sharks last night.  Joe Thornton still amazing at 39 for his hockey smarts and knowing where to be and what to do.  Jones strong between the pipes.  A second period wave that Colorado could not handle.
Hoping for a rebound by the Avs for game 2; otherwise it could be doubtful coming home.

It seemed to me the Avalanche was faster, more dominant most of the night. And then Thornton took it on his shoulders. It was a good game. I expect Colorado to bounce back.

Yup, it's gonna be a size vs. speed series; if San Jose neutralizes the Avs' scooters, it's gonna be a short four'n out and a long summer for Avs fans  Cry   Let's hope I'm wrong; keep the faith in coach Bednar to counter in game 2.

I was wrong.  Avs on their heels in first period, but Bednar rallied them for periods 2 & 3.  Grubaurer was on,  forecheck was on,  skating was on, defense held up for the win.

No excuses.  Colorado got out muscled by the Sharks last night; San Jose clogged up the neutral zone for most of the game.  Avalanche defensemen had only 7 SOG for 60 minutes of play; too few showing lack of offensive zone pressure.  Avs were also a couple of steps slow to the puck.  MacKinnon got mugged the whole game: crosschecks, held, tripped, and slashed beyond what is acceptable, even in playoff hockey, but the Sharks also played him smart with one man up on him and one laying back if he eluded the first forechecker.  Still, I'm pissed that somebody (mainly Zadarov) didn't drop his gloves against Burns as he was the primary mugger.
San Jose did deserve the game, but the refs let too much go at the Shark Tank.  It's all on the line in Denver tomorrow night.
Brubauer remains magnificent in his keeping the games close; it should have been at least 4-1 had it not been for his outstanding play.

Go Avs!  Gotta have it or it's empty out the locker day. tickedoff

Game 7!!!!!
Go Avs!!!!!

Announcer Chris Cuthberth is aboot (canada-speak) as terrible as I've listened to (he gives no respect to Colorado and is obviously slanted towards San Jose winning; muted the sound for the third period and I don't think I'll use it for #7.  The networks got rid of Gary Thorne a couple of years ago to replace him with this mook?  Please keep his voice up in the great white north, eh? After the Avs won in OT you could sense deflation in his throat as all his dreams were crushed by the upstarts from Denver.
 Cool

Go, go, Avalanche!!!

In the east it's Bruins vs. Hurricanes to see who plays for the Cup.  Boston in 6 prediction.

They had a hockey god (Bobby) watching from above (in the special box)...how could they lose?
Marchand is a punk...but a good player...much like Pie McKenzie from the 60-70's. (hated the little bastard, but he played his role and did his job for the B's to win their Cups); another pesky winger.

Actually, Montreal Canadiens will forever be my team, but they fell short this year AGAIN!  Why the hell they ever traded Suban for Weber will haunt me to my grave.  I pray they fire Bergevin this summer.  Angry

In the east it's Bruins vs. Hurricanes to see who plays for the Cup.  Boston in 6 prediction.

I like your style....... cooldude
I`m not sure why, but I just can`t pull for Boston teams.  Smiley Come on Hurricanes !
Boston has home ice advantage and hence my call for them in six.

Game 7 tonight.  Few are predicting that the Avs will win; well, not many predicted that they'd be at game 7.  I'm wishing for a 3-1 Grubauer backed Avalanche win (2-1 with an open net) to get them to the next round against St. Louis.   Go Avs!

I get it. It can be difficult to deal with all those championships. I find it hard to keep track.... Evil

The Stars were eliminated in double overtime of game 7 last night, so my brief flicker of interest has been extinguished...

Slightly related, took the triplets to a birthday party at an ice rink last weekend, their first time ever on ice skates (And my record of never remains unbroken). They loved it...

After freeskate and the party were over there was an adult hockey game on the ice, Blake was transfixed, just sat watching it; I had to drag him away.

He hasn't stopped talking about wanting to go back, skate more, learn to play hockey since.

So that might be a thing, we'll see...

I hope you can have the time and resources for him to play. Hockey is great sport for kids. You won’t regret it.  cooldude

Sign him up for skating lessons (only) and see how he likes it; that is the first step in evaluating his wanting to learn.  If a kid can progress from basic skating skills to power skating abilities, then the ability of playing hockey comes with more enjoyment if you can skate with skill.  Skating is the key to being a player and the key to learning good skating technique is a good coach and practice, patience, practice.  Fall...get up, again, and again, and again.  If a kid starts early, you'll know by the time he reaches 10 or 11 whether or not he'll pursue it through his teenage years; then he will or won't get intense about playing as a champion. smitten
