Two lane, no line, back country road.
A deer erupts from the trees to my left and just misses my front wheel. So quick I really didn't see much of the vermin.
A second deer has most of my attention. It's on my left running on the narrow verge at my speed.
As I register the first deer and immediately the second without conscious thought I let rip with a bayonet charging, berserker, claymore wielding scream at full volume leaning towards the deer.
This works and the deer veers left back into the trees and I'm slightly shaking from the adrenaline and my throat hurts.
The scream was completely involuntary and may be a tactic to use against other road users who infringe on my road space.
Later in the day a fricking walking turkey tried to commit suicide under my front wheel.

I've done the same thing a few times. It was pretty involuntary and much louder than a stock horn. Not sure if it's to warn anybody/anything off, or just to let all the sudden stress and tension out of the body. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0T4Yw-TabEI've also had days when I had to deal more beasties (and road kill) than the last 20 rides put together. Like the day I saw my first black bear (on a bike), and then 45 minutes later, another one. Both ahead of me on the road edge. Another day in southern MD with road kill of like 15 different species all over the place, and the guy ahead of me kicked (and launched) a big dead fluid-leaking skunk (using his toe to point it out, he got too low and under it). I didn't almost hit it too, but I almost fell off from laughing so hard.

I agree, kill the deer EVERYWHERE darn forest rates all over the place. 2 weeks ago heading home from work on valk i/s I was following a car about a 3 second following distance doing 63 mph or so and must have for a split second not seen his taillights for he braked VERY hard and 1 second later I locked up the rear tire 1st time EVER doing 60 mph. A deer crossed in front of his car pretty closely and the 2nd deer caught a glimpse and headed back around luckily or I would have gotten it. but, the car was closing in quickly me darn near rear ending him doing around 45 mph but he sped up VERY quickly LUCKILY for me. I think he saw me in his rearview mirror closing in on him ASAP and floored it quickly to not get me in his trunk.
Well, when that rear tire locked up doing 60 mph or so, my entire 800lb. bike slide sideways 30 degrees was going down for sure unless I let up on both brakes ASAP which I did. Guess what, bike straightened out ASAP darn near throwing me off was that intense and sudden of a slide (rear tire burning rubber off) to straight again was scary as all hell.
I learned my lesson will be 4-5 second following distance and paying attention if car ahead of me. I usually pass cars with my cycle but was only 5-6 miles from home and since he was doing 63 mph did not want to get a ticket in nearby town since the cops are on that hwy. all the time.

You know, the speed limit sign is not a suggestion that you go that fast Sometimes it warrants going slower.

A long long time ago I had one jump over the front fender and missed the bars and windshield by a couple inches. A nano-second difference and he would have been in my lap. The heck of this is that he decided to cross the road and I was going around behind him when he then decided to switch direction and go back where he came from. Had he had been a female I could have understood that reasoning. [I'm kidding, poor attempt at a joke. I don't want to get any of our gals mad at me.] I don't want to kill em all, they taste too good.

75-80% front brake to 20-25% rear no locking involved. I know split second happening but just keep this in you brain.

I was about 1 second away from sliding down sideways at the time doing say 45 mph since was slowing down VERY quickly. I was looking at the time at the car ahead of me, but for some reason his brake lights were very dim not very bright at all so did not notice his brake lights for that extra 2 seconds am sure he was applying his brakes very hard. I followed him into town and when he tapped his rear brake lights again, it was not my imagination, but definitely not very bright and sort of hard to notice right away.

I've had a deer run right into the side of my Jeep. My son's father in law has hit bush rats twice! He no longer rides. I've had very close calls myself. I've had cagers tailgate me on the highway as I point to the 'Caution Deer' sign to let them know that it ain't cool ridin' on my butt.
Does anybody use electronic deer whistles. My thought is that they may have very limited effect, but who knows what goes on between the ears of these animals. One thing that I do is ride with my High Beams on always!! for daytime riding. Not sure it helps, again, not sure what goes on between the ears of these critters...I'm guessing not much. For sure with the ones that bolt straight out of the bush there is no solution.

Riding is full of perils. Hell, life itself is full of perils. It may seem hypocritical coming from someone who has killed many deer, moose, caribou, and other animals. But, I have no desire to see them all killed.

Does anybody use electronic deer whistles.I heard a story once. The auto body shop guys fixing all the vehicular mayhem from deer strikes thought it was real funny that the insurance covered new deer whistles along with all the other damaged parts. Maybe if it only works once in a lifetime, it's worth buying one. Even though many (not all) Valks are pretty quiet (compared to the Vtwin crowd), you'd think they might hear the bikes coming louder than deer whistles. Are deer whistles supposed to be scary to deer? I admit to not watching as close as I should, but after I see one (or two or three), I tend to watch closer the rest of the day. My attention span is better than a gnat, but sometimes not that much better. I still worry about other cars and the roadway more than the woods. I do watch out more during rut season.

speaking of deer as I typed my comment above, I headed out this morning and 1 of 5 spots where I see deer weekly there was the forest rat standing in the middle of the road. I slowed down to a crawl speed and beeped the horn. She ran off the road, then a split second later, her and her twin hiding from me darted back across the road where they came from.
Sometimes I think beeping the horn makes them do crazier, more unexpected, things. They were on one side of the road and crossed but when beeped, the bolt out across the road again from where they came from. WHY? why not just keep going away on same side of the raod since already on the other side of the road?
I do not want to see all deer killed, but 90% around me would be nice since way, way too many. The DNR needs to offer FREE deer tags for about 10 years to all hunters to reduce the herd vs. the DNR being greedy and wanting money. DNR use to with CWD (chronic wasting disease) years ago offer free 2-3 or even 4 deer tags once you bought the first one with your license. That needs to come back NOW and for a long time to come.

I live in deer country and always keep the radio up. I think the sound of voices makes them lookup and see were the sound is coming from. Only close call was years ago with the radio off. I could hear the hoofs on the black top. Way to close!!

Mulies behave differently from whitetails. Mulies typically just stand around and mosey, unlike whitetails who wait until you get there then run in front of you. Mulies - watch the edges closely, if there's one there's more and they might just mosey onto the road. Sometimes they run but not often. They are used to traffic. If I see one I slow way down - if he looks nervous I might blow the horn so he does whatever he's gonna do before I get there. The big fire truck horn on Deerslayer always startles them into moving. Generally they will run in whatever direction they are pointed, standing there. Deerslayer got his name from such an incident - two mulies standing on the road, well away from edge cover and 3 hours before sunset. I didn't see them until too late because I was passing 3 cars and was otherwise occupied and moving fast (OK, 70). http://www.horseapple.com/placeholder/Boo-boo/boo-boo.html

2 deer sightings.
Riding up Hwy 149 towards Lake City. I go past a 30 foot slope on my left and part of the slope moves and a Muley reveals itself.
Then a young buck with velvet horns and a doe are out taking a stroll in Durangos southern residential area. Looking like they are house shopping.

Or pass a law like we have. No tags needed and each hunter is allowed 1 deer per day during season. Unless it is doe season then you can bag two. One buck and one doe.

This will probably get me banned or at least harshly ridiculed. Because it happened with my 1995 Road King. April 25 this year. While riding all day. About a 1/4 mile from the house around 9:00 pm running 40-45 mph. Something caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye. When I looked back in front of me there was a big ass doe right there. She looked as big as a house. My mind thought brake. That was it. I hit her dead center. The RK went down and I went flying. My Guardian Angel was with me that night.
