hey fellas,

im fairly new to working on my own bike, so bare with me. When I bought this bike, the horn didnt work, that bothers me, and in my mind is a bit of a safety issue. So I went ahead and bought a denali sound bomb with the wiring harness.

So im taking the pods off, and looking for where the manual says the old horn should be (in hopes i can trace wiring back and halfway figure out wtf im doing and throw the soundbomb in that way). Hoewever I cannot find the old horn anywhere, me thinks the old owner removed it, UNLESS its located in a different spot on a valkyrie interstate? I searched high and low and couldnt spot it.

The sound bomb wants me to hook into some relay somewhere, and hook into the oem horn, and to the battery. As I cannot find the oem horn, im hoping its not necessary for the soundbomb to work?

Also, i cannot find this dang relay for the life of me, i looked through the entire service manual, all the wiring diagrams, and when i go through the bike, i cant find it. Like i can route the wires to the battery no problem but I have zero idea where this is supposed to plug in at. Can anyone offer me some pointers or help me out?

I been googling and It hasnt helped.

id take it up to a bike shop, but, theyre all closed , or god awful busy due to covid. My bike sat at one for 3 weeks to get basic maintenance done on it before I pulled it and did it myself.

The horn is shown in the wiring harness.

It's mounted on the right (throttle) side just next to the radiator.

The wires should be in that area.

its definitely not there. ill double check the area for wires, but i wonder if they yanked those wires when they yanked the horn. this bike had a lot of in depth work done on it before i got it (carbs rebuilt and some other stuff)

If you take the gas tank off, which is somewhat of a project first time, you should be able to find the wires coming off the main harness.

It's been a while, but I believe the horn wires are two female ends.

If you post your location, someone might be close by to help.

I'm not sure what a Denali Sound Bomb is, but I was able to mount my horn in the right pod and used the oem wires so it runs off the oem horn button.

The OE horn is a mild meep meep and has (needs) no relay. (I'm pretty sure)

A loud horn draws more juice, and you have to add your own relay to it.  Some loud horns come with a relay.

See number 14?  (meep meep)

There's almost nothing on a Valkyrie less impressive that it's horn.  (maybe the valve stems)

I only use horns to pass inspections:  So the meep meep is OK for me.

Im in granite city, illinois. I will probably need to get creative with mounting (which is fine i can handle that, i just dont know how to hook it up, messing with wiring in a vehicle isnt something ive done a lot of. so im kinda running blind.

Im almost positive itll need more juice than what the oem horn needs.

Beats me, I completely suck at auto electric, and pay it all done.  Sorry.

One thing you might do:  (lay down and) Look under the bike near the kickstand because a lot of guys wire a loud horn up out of sight down under the swingarm.  I had two Stebil Nautilis compact air horns down there, but they both sucked up too much water and dirt and stopped working (about a year each).  It's possible there's a non working horn under there on your bike.... and at least you can find the wiring for it.

I got tired of mine self destructing, so I went back to a meep meep auto parts horn, which never wears out.

Perhaps another member close to you can lend a hand.

There are likely some good Utubes on wiring up loud MC horns with relays.

And there are all kinds of wiring diagrams on here..... somewhere.

ok i took a peak under the bike. theres two big ass horns hooked up to some kind of cylinder in the battery compartment, and that has its own relay....im wondering if the compressor or whatever went out, and the relay is good? then maybe i could just swap the parts out
guessing
idk really what im looking at here.

After market air horns.

The cylinder thing is the compressor and is probably toast.  Hot wire it to a battery to test it.

Most likely the installer used the OEM horn wires to fire the compressor.

You'll have to follow the wires and custom fit everything to work with your plan.

yea i figured that out, and figured out where the relay is for that horn, popped the ends off and popped them on the new horn. (was a bitch because everything was wrapped in like six layers of tape). BUT the new horn didnt fire. i will test the horns out by a direct connection to the battery tho

Welcome.  (Even though I suck at electrical, I knew where to look.)

That Denali sound bomb is essentially the same Stebel Nautilus I (and many) had.  Another copy is the Wolo Bad Boy (all the same, at least externally, with and without plastic chrome)

If you are going to put your new horn down under the swingarm where the old one was, position it best so dirt and water aren't sucked up in it... ie, aim it backwards, but the horn must be faced down so water drains back out.   It's not like it can't be heard that way.  See if yours lasts longer than mine.

Using it, prolongs it's life.  Scare pedestrians and small animals.   Grin

Here's where a lot of guys have mounted their Stebels  (if you don't have the Kuryakyn tranny covers in the way) where they last longer than under the swingarm.  (again, horns are aimed down for gravity drain)

ok thank you for the tip, i was literaly just arguing with myself where the eff im gonna mount it, since i got all the wiring done and everything almost zipped back up. was thinking of mounting it behind the dash/ HUD on the forks with zipties, theres an area back there itd fit, but i worry about zip ties long term. ill look into doing it like the picture.

Really, I don't think vibration or bouncing will hurt it, just water and dirt.

Double up on the zipties if you go that way.  And make sure you have good clearance lock to lock on the bars.... and fork travel (where I once completely screwed up the front fender on my old Harley with the horn under the headlamp).

I just shoved a new air horn in under the driver seat, along with the relay..

it's loud as hell, a guy started to cut me off and I laid on it.. he jumped and jerked so I know it was LOUD..

It's close to the battery terminals, all I needed do was extend the lead from the switch..

yesterday I pulled the switch housing apart and cleaned the leads on the horn switch along with the turn signals.. oh, also cleaned the clutch switch while I was in the mood.

THIS is almost identical to the way my similar Air Horn is mounted. Even down to being Chrome. The first one I had was mounted where the old meep meep went-lower right crash bar. Did NOT live long down there at all. Try NOT to enclose the air horn-too large a sound drop off versus in the open. Another place you'll find an air horn on an I/S is under the trunk-Sometimes.  i ended up attaching it to one of the radiator gaurd screws, then putting a pod over it, to protect it from the weather.

the pod fit over it just about perfect

Here is my thread. I scrolled down to the one with the fairing off, you can see the horn on the throttle side fork. It was zip tied there.

http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,96578.0.html

I bought a pair of high/low horns with a relay for only $26 CAD, which is a little further down. I did install the pair of GL1800 horns I bought a long time ago, but have since replaced with the round aftermarket set from the box.

As you can see, I mounted them in the stock location, the crash bar bolt, on each side.

Here's what I did with my Stebel. Didn't include the part of installing the relay but you definitely need one.

Yes indeed, I was ready for him no matter what.. had I not hit the horn he would have come close.. a little too close.

Anyway the dude was cool and very apologetic he didn't see me.

I saw him though  cooldude
