Figured I'd try to post updated day by day of Kali and I's excellent adventure. From another thread, this was day one: 400 VERY FARKING HOT!!! miles down.... Kali and I in a motel in eastern Arkansas for the night.... Had what I think was the mud flap from a semi hit me, than Kali and dented the front fender on my Standard (But Kali handled it like a champ!) which makes me sad, but glad she handled it!!! Sent her out to pick up dinner.... Er.... This is what the local Wendy's had to deal with, since they ONLY allowed drive thru, so she HAD to ride to pick up dinner....... Tomorrow should have us in eastern Tennessee, then over US129 and into Asheville Sunday! Can't wait!!!!! Safe travels for all!!

Day two, and we're in our motel in eastern Tennessee.... Not much to to day, just lots of grinding out miles on hot I40. I hate Nashville. I hate Nashville so very very much. I hate Memphis too, but not nearly as much as I hate Nashville.... Tomorrow will be Kali's first ride through US129. I've been emphasizing and re-emphasizing to her to ride her own ride, don't let anyone push you faster than you're comfortable. There are plenty of pulloffs, use them and let the zip-splats zip by. Tonight she walked to Taco Bell to pick up dinner, since we're both pretty Burger'ed out, and neither of us are up to trying to go somewhere to sit down for dinner..... I forsee an early bedtime tonight and up and at it tomorrow, US129, whatever else we decide to do, and on to Ground Zero.... Safe travels to all that are heading there, and to those who can't or won't as well!!!

Try Nashville or Memphis rush hour in a big truck. And I've been thru both on Phatt Ghurl. In 14 when daprez and I ran the Dragon we stopped at the dam and two Tennessee State Troopers H/D mounted talked to us for a bit and basically said the same thing you told Kali. Wish I wuz there with y'all. Glad yer ridin Bud is enjoying Motorcycling so much. Yer also building Memories she will NEVER fergit. Good on ya both. RIDE SAFE.

It was raining yesterday, so made the decision that rain + a weekend day, we'd postpone 129..... Planning on heading up and doing it today, once we get moving...

No shame in riding pillion the 1st time thru on a busy Sunday. She will master that road one day Looks like she had more fun than dad looking so serious Legal is proud of her for recognizing her temporary boundaries. With experience and practice she will tame dragons, snakes and whatever the heck they call the road (But tornadoes, stay away from those ok?)

Yup, that was us.... It was raining Sunday so we skipped it then, but yesterday (Monday) we both rode out to ride US-129. As we got closer and the roads got twistier Kali started getting more and more nervous, until finally just a mile or two from the Deal's Gap Resort, on a sharp curve over a bridge and a small street turning off she got target fixation on the bridge wall, had another bike crawling up her butt, got nervous and just stopped in the road. She got the bike over to a pull off, got off, and just sat by a creek for a while contemplating her life choices. After some calming talk from daddy, I finally convinced her to at least ride the rest of the way to the Deal's Gap store place, then we could decide a course of action from there. She did, but requested on just riding as a passenger for the ride itself. I was disappointed, but proud and respectful at the same time. Kind of felt sorry for my standard, having to sit there unridden watching all the other bikes having so much fun, but c'est la vie. It was still a fun ride, and honestly had she ridden I would have been a nervous wreck the whole time, so kind of relieved. And most importantly, no new contributions were made to the Tree of Shame... On the ride we got to see a bear sitting in the middle of the road, which was pretty cool! He seemed very calm and relaxed but ran back into the woods when a Harley came loud piping by... I tried to get a picture of the bear, but only managed to get a picture of me looking at the bear before he ran off..... I didn't think of it until we had already left, but I wish I'd thought to recreate this pic of her prior visit when she was 7 or so... (The time I made my mother in law vomit while driving across 129 in my car.....) Kali's fashion sense has improved. A smidgen......

I have had almost that exact set of circumstances teaching my wife Serk.
She would reach a point of frustration and challenge (and with her, always spitting anger), and refuse to ride anymore. Never the mostly straight and level, always the curvy and elevation changes. And we'd have to take a long break, and then I'd talk her into going home, easy. I can't ride two bikes home dear. But once the confidence is shot, they do need to stop riding that day (except home).
It's really a lack of confidence, not skill. A few close calls or hairy adventures, and the confidence drops to zero. And only continuing practice and time (but not that day) brings back the confidence (and a bit more skill).
But tell her this, I've been at Inzanes and other group rides in the NC TN VA mountains when other old long-time riders from the pure flat country really did pretty poorly in the mountains. And some of those guys should have stopped, but didn't and later went off the road. There's really no way to learn to ride in the mountains and severe twisties, but to do it.

Kudos to Kali for riding “her” ride and having the wisdom and courage beyond her years to know when to hold’em and know when to fold’em. She’ll be back another day and knock it out when she’s ready.

serk, you have a normal cycle tire on that 98 tourer correct? I know a car tire on back handles differently taking a tad bit more challenge on curvy roads to turn. Have you asked Kali how she feels about handling such a large cycle? I know she does not want to disappoint you, but is a slight guess that she might be holding back possibly on telling you that she might prefer a smaller/lighter cycle? A burgman 650 or honda CTX700 as examples are more of a good choice and plenty capable of going long distance touring. LIke said, just a hunch, but she may have not been so scared about going around corners if she had a smaller, lighter, more agile cycle to drive. I know if I was age 18 again, my 1st cycle would never be a honda valkyrie, at least for the 1st 2 years or so.
She is tall and growing as evident, but the Valk is no beginner cycle for most. Even my kid age 19 now was age 17 when 1st took it for a spin, took it WAY WAY easy when on my 98 tourer and still does and he is normal size was 170lbs. now 190lbs. He does not carve corners on it like his fjr1300 never has.
anyways, stay safe and good for you for not pushing her about it am sure she feels sad enough over it. Also tell her the faster riders in back on the twisties to pay no attention to them ride her own ride. If they want to attempt to pass, they surely can if they get lucky to not get hit on those curvy roads. I have never waived a cycle or truck/car behind me on my cycle to pass me, but can see it with some crazies wanting the need for speed doing 75 mph on up.
and YES, I know how you feel the 1st 2 years of letting your daughter, for me my son, go out on their own age 16 thru age 18 or so by themselves on any cycle. I still cringe when my kid takes his fjr1300 out he is on college campus area now he told me he went for a short 200 mile jaunt yesterday on it up in northern WI. Not sure if he will sell it though this fall his choice, his money he paid for it, or not can easily get 4K for it and he does not have a lot of time between working now and in the fall going back to college to get much use out of it.

I guess I have ridden NC-28 out of Nantahala more than I thought with our Florida group, as I know this little bridge and the Smoky Mountain park sign at the turn off, (twenty mile ranger station road) Maybe one day this too will be a recreate the shot spot.

So little update now that Inzane XX is in the history books... Somewhere in there Kali and I decided to ride the BRP up to the top of the highest point east of the Mississippi (You Coloradoans can stop laughing, I know, we have higher mountains even in Texas, but it was quite beautiful in its' own way!) (All of this Kali chose to still ride pillion) That evening something occurred with pies, I can't recall too many details due to the sugar rush I'm still coming down off of: And then the next day we had a blast blasting through thick pea soup fog on the poker run. Yay! I "won" worst hand! Thursday evening we had the big blow out. I have to admit, after seeing it was 45 minutes away from ground zero, I almost skipped out on it. I'm so glad I didn't. Staff, with only a week to find a location, absolutely knocked this one out of the park! I was asked to be used to demonstrate the length of raffle tickets that $20 would buy a person: Auctions were auctioned, raffles were raffled, food was eaten, lies were swapped. A great time was had by all..... Awards were handed out..... Kali..... did okay..... (She's already planning out a "VRCC Award" section on her wall now...) From the Valkyrie rodeo: And the one she's proudest of, 2 years running Youngest Rider award.... (Literally.... anytime anyone showed up that looked like they MIGHT be younger than her she'd stalk 'em, ask if they rode, and start planning where to hide the body i they'd said yes.....) We got up this morning, said our good byes, packed the bikes, ate what we could of the awful hotel breakfast (For once I don't blame the hotel, they were really trying and doing the best they could for us under difficult circumstances, but man....... anyway.....), and headed out.... Did a little under 400 miles today, the heat just wears me down. Kali actually wanted to go another hundred or two miles but I was getting foggy in my judgement so called it. We're just west of Birmingham AL for the night..... To all we met, safe travels, and my life is richer for having met you. For all we missed, my life is poorer or having missed you. For all who I didn't seem to have the time for, believe me I wish I could have sat and chatted for hours, but I was doing the best I could, I sincerely hope we get the chance later to sit and swap lies for hours! Tomorrow planning on making it to at least Shreveport. Could make it home (~600 miles) pretty easily, but this heat just drains me, so taking it safe, and not in TOO big of a hurry for this adventure to end just yet.....
