I keep getting these orders for huge and heavy stuff. An 80”X42” solid red oak table top. Weighs about 300 lb. there’s no planer big enough so it’s hand sanding. I’m covered like an abominable snow/sawdust man.

What kind of hand sanding? When I glue up stuff like that (not
that big) and sand it with my random orbital sander the top is
nice but "not all in the same plane"...

A random orbital after a very aggressive angle grinder sander and a long level to keep checking for high spots.

$350 or $3,500 ? If it’s the former, that’s not near as bad as I thought.

That's a table people could dance on.   Grin  (please remove shoes)

I hope someone has done the measuring on the front (or back) door.  Or maybe the legs can come off?

Trestle legs?

Have you ever tried a long hand plane followed by a Swedish Cabinet Scraper?

Damn! That's one big fat chunky table.. I had a 300-pound 48" Custom Door built for one of my jobs, that was a fun one to hang.

What did you do to join the pieces?

I cut captured 1/2” grooves the entire length of each mating surface and made long spline biscuits out of 1/2 plywood and 5 gallons of glue. I think it’s pretty strong.

That's a nice looking door! I like that style.. I'm partial to big wooden doors, beams etc., and I like the look of iron along with it  cooldude

Trestle legs?

Jess-further back then I care to recollect I moved furniture professionally. Had a couple of tables that would Not knock down. Used a move called hooking it around a door jamb. Sometimes the door(s) needed to be removed. In all the years bedbuggin had two pieces we could Not get onto the truck with out MAJOR cash outlay by the shipper. One was an upright piano in a basement that had the outside entrance concreted off and a spiral staircase installed. The diameter off the opening was Not large enough for the piano even with the staircase removed. A similar problem with a snooker table.

Stain and hand rubbed tung oil complete. Now I just need to put a whitewash finish on the two pedestal bases.

Well, I do not have the talent for creating furniture. . . I can restore it:

Just finished, 100 + year old oak

Thanks, but those of us that do this kind of stuff know there is a big difference in talent from creating to restoring.  I have a neighbor friend that was a finish carpenter for a decade or so and he has done for me absolutely fantastic creative work over a few decades now.  I am a butcher carpenter compared to folks like you that make stuff from scratch.

Nice work with whole lot patience added!  cooldude

Just completed a dry sink for my D'law for her campsite. Dealing with treated lumber "tweaks" was a challenge but turned out extremely well as for squareness etc. but ratchets straps were my saviour in this endeavor. $360 in lumber, steel siding, and all stainless hardware for 80" x 24" unit.

My wood working talent is along the lines of cut it and burn it while having an adult beverage.

I finally got the bases for the oak table project. They will get whitewashed and a light coat of low gloss polyurethane. I’ll send more pics.

They are a bit fancy but I didn’t choose them

They look fancy.. and pricey!
I could make those with the right bandsaw and drum sander (among others), some praying and a lot of sanding (and cussing likely).. and a lot more sanding.. and cussing..  Grin

I just don't have the patience anymore  Tongue
