Just got back from a 2 hour ride. It felt like the engine was revving pretty high in 5th gear. I was doing 65 and the rpms were about 3200. I accelerated to 70 and the rpms were 3500. Maybe I've just nevered noticed this before and it's normal, but I could swear the last few times I've ridden the Valk the RPMs were 2500 when I was going 65? Is it me or is it the bike? I double checked to see if the brake pads are disengaging and they look okay. I've always thought the Valk could benefit from a overdrive (6th) gear. Any thoughts out there?

Fourth and Fifth gears, on Gen 1 Valks, are both overdrives.

If you are not on the throttle,  then the rpms will drop and you may see that low a #

Like steel cowboy I am at 3000 somewhere between 65 and 70

Fourth and Fifth gears, on Gen 1 Valks, are both overdrives.

only for GW GL1500 engines.

According to Fred Rau in motorcycle consumer news june 05 article.

Valkyries 3rd 1.291, 4th 1.00, 5th .805.  Was Honda thinking?, should have kept the GL1500 ratios.

GW GL1500 3rd 1.272, 4th .964, 5th .758.

1st and 2nd are the same both engine models

You are correct. The magazine I read in 98 was mistaken according to the factory service manual.

I did the math, and using the approximate tire O.D., I got just about 22mph per 1000rpm, so 3000rpm would be about 66 mph. Tire wear, type, and maker all play into this, of course.

I've always found that the speed in 5th grade is double the room divider by 100.  I.E. 3500rpm x 2=7000/100=70mph.  Comes in handy if you break a speedo cable, you can use the tach to get a rough idea of you speed.

I find the tach is always more accurate than the speedo, so  nearly always use it for a better idea of the speed.

I read the late model Wings had a different ratio set.

                           Primary     Secondary       Final          1st          2nd        3rd           4th       5th

     Valk                1.591         .971             2.833         2.66        1.72       1.291       1.00     .805

  '97-'00 Wing           -----         -----            -----        -----       -----          1.272        .964    .758

Maybe that's where I'm getting confused. I have a 94 GW I still ride occasionally. Maybe I was getting the Valk and GW confused. I definitely think the gear ratio of the Goldwing is better. Can the Valkyrie's be modified to use Goldwing gears?

The Gold Wing is a Gold Wing. The Valkyrie is a Valkyrie. Honda designed a little more attitude into the latter. Most people that messed around with the gears on a Valkyrie put it back to stock. Just ride it

You're right, the Valk does have a lot more attitude and loves the high rev's.

the link provides some info on changing the gears. requires splitting the engine cases to change out 4th and 5th gears.
easy way which I did is use a 205/65-16 car tire which lowers rpms by about 200 which makes it what rpms the GW GL1500 has.
