A p63 Kingcobra and b17 collided.  Both planes just came apart.
Prayers for those lives lost.

Being reported locally a total of 6 souls were aboard.

While I mourn for the lives lost, there aren't many airworthy WWII birds left either, and now there are 2 fewer...

For sure.  I've always loved the WWII planes.

Didn't we used to have a member on here that was part of a vintage military aircraft team? Pretty sure he was in Texas, and it seems to me that he was with a group that flew a B-17.

Yeah, I remembered that too, just did a search...

Oh my! He specifically worked with the Texas Raiders, the one that went down!

Edit to add:
Hope he wasn't on board, but he evidently was heavily involved... Saw a post where he was selling his Valk to work on the plane more, and found this pic from 2015 on his Facebook page:

Thoughts and prayers for those lost.

I saw the article earlier but did not have time to give it a look.

R I P to the 6 Souls lost. Any B 17 is well over 75 years old. From what I saw of the video the tail was cut off near the side gunners area. As quickly as the tail sperated Maybe some metal fatigue? Again R I P to those 6 Airmen lost today. RIDE SAFE.

It was a mid-air collision.   While I could be wrong, it appears (from the video I've seen) that the fighter sliced the bomber in half.   A miscalculation by the fighter pilot, a mechanical issue he couldn't control, can't tell but...........

So sad.   Cry

No matter how many times you see these air show tragedies, they're never easy to watch.  R.I.P. to the fliers, and prayers out for their grieving loved ones.

My brother and I flew on a B17 out of Cape May Naval Air Station just a month before that plane crashed in Connecticut  It was part of the Collings foundation  They also fly a b24. P51 and other planes around the country and are restoring a b17G presently

Aviation is dangerous as is riding a motorcycle.

That said, the men and women who restore our aviation history are some of our best and I am praying for the families of those killed.

I hope in the future there are rules about separation at these air shows as a b17 as slow as it flies had no chance of survival in this mid air crash

Here is a pretty good analysis by a private individual of this accident.

I learned a few things, especially about the P63.

Confirmed 6 fatalities...

The VRCC member involved with this plane has updated his Facebook profile to an image of the bomber with the note "In memory of all my friends and family and all my time with this plane" so he appears to not have been one of the six...

The loss of human life is always tragic and these classic aircraft are irreplaceable.

The loss of both is cause to mourn.  Cry

Just learned that the pilot lost on the B17 was also (likely) the pilot of the C47 the wife and I flew looking at Christmas lights a while back:
