ALL New Cars Must have Ignition Interlocks & Sensors to Detect and Prevent Operating if alcohol is detected  police Here is MORE technology Mandated for law abiding citizens to pay, courtesy of the outgoing resident. Originally set to take affect for ALL 2025 models, has now been updated to 2026 vehicles. Let the honest consumers pay for and maintain MORE Unproven technology
This Pipe Dream has been proposed in the past and ruled Unconstitutional, a minor inconvenience for the present “administration “ , C’Mon Jan 20!!!  tickedoff
Having guilty drivers pay for installation of interlocks on their own vehicles is reasonable, forcing Everyone
To underwrite this & drive up new car costs is overreach, while the resident is busy pre-pardoning his family for crimes they may commit in the future, we are once again stuck paying for more faulty gimmicks   Mandatory technology from the cluele$$

Eletronic's use in the drivers seat would be more important in my mind. These texters and hands on phone use is in my opinion (.02) are much more common and dangerous. Phone use in the drivers seat for emergency use only. Also hands free or programed use to have a short time limit. If you need more time on the phone , then stop and park.

Since the interlock devices are used as a common punishment for those convicted of driving under the influence and they are monitored by the government.

I don't see how this can be Constitutional, since it punishes drivers that haven't been convicted of breaking the law.

Back in the 70's GM did something that involved the sequence of steps needed to start the car.

The theory was that someone who was intoxicated wouldn't be able to perform the steps in the correct order and couldn't start the car.

Since this didn't become mainstream it must not have worked.

I was not up on anything recent concerning this so I did a little research and this is all I could find.

Adding a car breathalyzer to existing penalties could substantially discourage drunken driving

(In 2021, as part of an infrastructure bill, the Biden administration would have required automakers to install new technology that would detect and prevent impaired driving in all new cars sold. The proposal is now in a lengthy rulemaking phase at the NHTSA and far from assured of implementation.)

Will continue to look but if you can provide a link, would be greatly appreciated.

From the link below:

Nov 11, 2021
The just-passed infrastructure bill includes $17 billion for auto safety—and a new rule.

Under the Biden administration's $1 trillion infrastructure package, a mandate requires automakers to install new technology in vehicles to prevent motorists from driving intoxicated. As reported by the  Associated Press , with the provision, Congress is pushing for the monitoring systems to begin rolling out in new vehicles no later than 2026.

Regarding the above.

I am not a supporter of this type of technology.

First, it could be easily (it would seem) to fake or bypass.

Second, it adds complexity to the car.  That adds additional costs.

Just my two cents.

This looks ripe for abuse! I haven’t seen any technical details. Is it Breathalyzer type that requires Driver to blow into a tube & prevents starting? I’ve only seen references to “sensors”, which could be in headliner or anywhere & sense a drunk passenger
No one wants drunk drivers but this seems like a hair brain scheme  & is sure to add costs for more gimmicktry ensuring future breakdowns

More left wing monkeys punishing everyone for the sins of the few.

Mandatory jail sentences is the solution.  Punish the offenders.

There are recidivist laws (increased punishments for repeat offenders) in most (or all) states.  A third offense can be charged as a felony (not the usual misdemeanor).  But the DA has to charge them that way, otherwise each offense is another first offense.

Decades ago, my poor younger brother got 7 DUIs in 10 years (there was never an accident or injury or reckless driving/speed, he'd just get pulled over weaving his way home at or under the limit from the bars after closing).  Always cooperative, never combative.  One late night, they brought him to me and begged me to do something, left him with me, and didn't even charge him (I knew most of the small town cops).  The whole family was on him during these years, and it had no effect at all.  His only drink was Don Q 151 proof rum... which will hammer you sideways.

And every offense was charged as a first offense and he'd plead guilty to lesser offenses at first, and straight up for later offenses (all fines and probation).  Finally on number 7, they charged him a recidivist and sent him to jail for 4 months.  He served every day, and never had another drop of alcohol in his life, turned into a model citizen, and rose to the top of his profession (industrial carpenter foreman with 30 man crew.  And no drunks could work for him).

This story is true, and a blueprint for how the criminal justice system is supposed to work.  Except they should have jailed him at #3, not #7.

From way back, I recall drunk drivers using 12vt aquarium pumps on their auto breath testers.
