Yesterday cruising along on flat road my 1500 asked to be put on reserve about a gallon too early. Once on reserve and after fill up with the fuel valve back to normal all was good. I suspect I have a partial blockage in the strainer, fuel valve, or vent? Is there anything else I should be looking at?

if OEM petcock vacuum diaphragm is wearing out restricting flow.  more fuel in tank creates more head pressure overcoming the bad diaphragm

+1 for suspecting early signs of petcock failure. That’s how my headaches started. It got worse. I rebuild the vacuum side with a cover set. Then the selector knob side wore out. Scrapped it and went with a Pingel. No more issues for the last 15 years

It does sound very similar to what happens with a fuel line with a dip in it.  If one has replaced the fuel line (as with a quick disconnect unit) it can result in the occasional air bubble that needs extra pressure.

Thanks, the fuel line looks good, no quick disconnect, so I'm leaning toward the petcock valve. I like the diaphragm valve - getting forgetful in my old age. I'll make sure the tank vent is good and likely spend the money for a new petcock and strainer kit. Honda Parts Nation and Partzilla point me toward a Honda 16950-MZO-033 petcock kit but then Partzilla says it doesn't fit my bike - the picture looks great. Can anyone tell me if the available Honda part fits? Also the K&L 347385-461249 at parts giant seems to be direct replacement at about 1/2 the cost of the Honda part. Any opinions on the K&L?

just get the rebuild kit instead of paying $$$ for a new petcock. easy to rebuild.

I agree. The cover set will buy you some time. When it fails again just scrap it and get a Pingel

rebuilt mine 20yrs ago still going strong, however I also installed a snubber in the vacuum line at the same time to soften the high pulsation to the diaphragm when on/off on the throttle during shifts, esp., during higher rpm shifts.

Non vacuum petcock is also an option. I'm running this on my bike along with an electric fuel shut off. Now I have no vacuum lines on my bike that can fail. Part #16950-MAL-603.

Thanks all for this great information! It was 84 degrees in North Texas today, so I started by running the gas down in the tank and functionally testing the vent. Not a bad job cooldude
