The wife and me were driving (pretty conservatively, certainly not driving like a racecar), from Meriam Ar to Montgomery on I65S, on our wat to Dothan(where we are spending the night). This lifted, 4wd dark colored 1/2 ton Ram pickup, whom we had passed (non-aggresively) started encroaching on my lane. I moved over/slowed down to let him in front, then when he started again, I moved over and did the same thing slowed to let him. When he started encroached THAT lane, I hit the brakes HARD but no tire screeching. He passed in front, then went into the median, drove a short distance, then came THROUGH the barrier. I had hit accelerator pedal to get the heck out of there,  but I  saw him come through/ over the barrier, tearing the tire on driver side front off the rim, and doing additional damage to his truck, before  coming to a stop in the middle lane. We were gone, and after the excitement  of that 2-5 seconds, and we were safe, we boogie. I did see other drivers stop to help him.

Our guesses were he had fallen asleep, wasn't paying attention,  had some medical issue, or had a road rage incident. My We figured the local drivers could more effectively contact 911. A very adrenalin moment.

Those occurances happen fast.  Gotta always be on the lookout.   Glad you and the wife are ok.

unfortunately,  these type of issues with drivers on the road are becoming more and more common, at least around my area.    Falling asleep at the wheel, medical issues, playing with cell phones, seem to be a weekly occurrence but usually is cell phone use.   One lady last week had her cell phone while driving in town with traffic right on top of her steering wheel in front of her vision texting away right next to me.  What I would not give to have my dad's old 1986 caprice classic tank of a car which I do not care if got dented or not on the roads.  There would be a lot less cell phone texters driving their vehicles on the roads.

Ok - the trip -

We were going down to Tampa Fl to visit one of my Dorm Roomates ( the most memorable one) and his wife. So, the above incident happened on our way down there. Other than that, most of our road time was uneventful.  We had left on Friday Oct 24. Our first night was spent in Meriam AR, the second Night was in Dothan AL, and we arrived in Tampa the next day. MOnday we rested, and on Tuesday OCT 28, we headed down to Key West (pretty much a 12 hour drive. Since Charles had finished up enough time to earn retirement, he was eligible to stay in the Navy Lodge. We stayed in a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom trailer, which was comfortable enough. We then hit downtown Key west (Duval street), where we hit Sloppy Joes for (what else ?) sloppy joes sandwiches, then we went up and down Duval street  (wife on her mobility scooter, the rest of us walking). When we had enough, we went back to the trailer and called it a night.

Wednesday, we played tourists. Started with breakfast at Sandy's Cafe, then we (wife and me) went to see Ernest Hemingway's house, watched a video about its history, then headed out. Toured Fort Zachery Taylor, Then we  (wife and me) went to the "Most Southern point in CONUS" (pictures taken). Dinner was at one of the many seafood places. After that, we went back and crashed out.

Thursday, we got up and found breakfast, then headed back to Tampa. Dinner along the way was at Fuddruckers in Miami. Twisted Shrimp (Islamorada Key) was lunch just a couple hours earlier. Friday and Saturday we did some sightseeing around Tampa.

Sunday we started on our way back home, and stayed at Birmingham AL. Monday, we made it to Springfield MO, and we got in KC just after Noon. So now we are back to real life.

We plan on starting the process of obtaining our passports, and maybe next summer after family reunion, head to Maine, maybe do some driving in the Canadian Maritimes, and head home stopping at Niagara Falls, and do some more Canadian driving, making entry in Minnesota and driving in Wisconsen. before heading home. After driving in Iowa (about 3 hours away) Nebraska and the Dakotas, we will have the Eastern, Mideast, and most of the Great plains covered. Then in the next couple years, I'd like to fill out most of the Western states, and someday even get to Alaska,

A cruise is not out of the question either.

Sound like a great trip to FL (except for the incident).   Love the idea of your next one.  Stay safe.
