Congrats to the rest of you quitters too! I'm really close to my 2 year mark, the urge still hits from time to time, but it's not NEARLY as bad as it was those first three months or so...

I went through a program at work and along with patches was successful.
Figure out how much you spent on smoking annually and reward yourself with something useful or fun for that same amount.
I didn't read all the replies but one great benefit that you should notice is that you're not getting colds nearly as frequently and on the occasion that you do, it usually won't go to your chest and last 2 weeks and kick your ass.

Day 2, HG is hiding from me, I'm not very sweet today. It is ashame that I've allowed this to control my life, I walk around and wonder what I can do, instead of smoking. I feel like I'm going to jump out of my skin, and it's too early to start drinking. Looking forward to day3>>>>>> FB

Hang in there FB.  The first few days are the worst.

You have a lot of folks here pulling for you.

Take a walk, ride a bike, do whatever you need to do get through today, tomorrow may be better.

As an aside (and this is not a recommendation), I never believe it is too early to start drinking. Evil

Congrats FB! I knew you'd still be a quitter... Smiley

I take it Mr. Glue isn't joining you in this endeavor? I know it makes it harder when the other half is still puffing and you're not. Tarynn kept smoking for 1.5 years after I quit... That was an extra challenge I had, but it's still doable!

OK ... here is a suggestion that was offered to me and as goofy as it may sound there are some side benefits. The suggestion made early on when I stopped smoking was when the urge strikes ... brush my teeth and be sure to brush my tongue.
First it will give me something to do that has a positive benefit (who can argue about clean teeth & breath).
Second my mouth was conditioned for the taste of a cigerette, brushing my teeth & tongue introduced a new taste to my mouth while washing the taste of cigerettes away.

It helped me and still helps me.

Just my $0.02 worth.

I finally got my spousal unit to quit in a rather unique way...

January I found out I was Type II Diabetic. They immediately want ya' to go get a full blood work up and stuff, and I flat out wasn't gonna do it. I HATE needles... Hate 'em...

She kept nagging me to go have it done, and I kept flat out refusing...

I finally stopped, looked at her, and said ya' know... We've both got something we both know we have to do to live longer to see our daughter graduate, get married, have kids of her own, etc that we REALLLLLY don't wanna do... Let's make a deal... I'll go to the vampires for the blood work up, and you put down the smokes. Right now. For good.

I actually did that hoping she'd leave me alone about getting the blood workup done, but to my VERY pleasant surprise it worked! She agreed that was a fair trade, put 'em down, and hasn't picked 'em back up since...

That's a great story Serk. I wish both you and your wife a total return 100% health!

Being "there" for my kids (now fabulous young adults) is the most important thing I do everyday. Getting sober and then putting down the smokes allows me to do it.

My wife and friends don't seem to mind either.

Dag, you have really turned the corner. Doign this while your wife still smokes must have (and may still be) much harder that when I was the only one in my home smoking.

It is hard to watch others smoke once you see it for what it really is. But we all know how difficult it is to quit and so we must be understanding and have some acceptance of of other smokers. We were there too.

When I was smoking 2.5 packs of Marlboros a day I was convinced I could never quit. That was 15 years ago now. (where did they go!?)

A good long, slow, deep breath is pretty helpful when the urge arrives-also good for anger and stress.  Breathe all the way to your waist so your stomach expands and a sloooow exhale through your lips.  I think you'll see THAT urge disappear.  And don't forget to put a carrot in front of you and dream about what you can reward yourself with the money formerly spent on smoking.

What people don't realize is that lung cancer usually isn't the bullet that they need to dodge.  I worked for Veteran's Administration for 30 years and worked with many co-workers in excess of 20 years and and saw that those with similar habits or history as I (drinking and smoking)  were getting bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer, and don't forget colon cancer.
Most people say "F... it, I lived life-had fun", but watch someone go through this and you may just change your tune.  If you do dodge these bullets, you'll graduate to COPD or better yet, emphacima (where you can breathe in just fine-you just can't exhale or absorb oxygen).
Where do you put your piss and sh..t bags when you're wearing shorts or better yet, when you're trying to score some pu....y.

It's been over 10 years for me and yes the urge still pops up and I think to myself "HAVING A CIGARETTE IS NOT AN OPTION".

Sorry for all the grim stuff and the best of luck to y'all.

You would not belive what smoking robs you of. You will not be able to do the things you loved to when you were younger, because you can`t breathe. I.E. walk to the mail box, bend over to pull a weed, go to the bathroom, bend over to pet your dog, IN SHORT, do anything other than setting "down"   STOP NOW. And hope it`s not too late.

Everything Spirited-6 spelled out below, says it all.  I quit 1 1/2 years ago after smoking for 35 years.  I have COPD...emphysema and asthma triggered by exertion...also Obstructive Cardio Myopathy.  I have 12 prescriptions.  2 weeks ago I started  Pulmonary Rehab at the hospital.  There are a lot of people in this program but there are 12 in my class in the time slot on the days I attend.  Out of 12, 3 of us are not on oxygen.  All those on oxygen also have to use those wheeled walkers.  Get this...everyone smoked for 35 years.  It's like some magic number.  One gal quit 10 years ago and just now got sick.  I hope I don't end up on oxygen as that will put an additional cramp in my lifestyle.

I wish everyone who is quitting, success!  I used Chantix to get off cigarettes because I would never had the willpower to quit cold turkey.  Once in a while I think smoking a cigarette sounds like a good idea, but that passes in less than a minute.

One more thing.  It may be the effects of the Chantix, but I find it hard to believe I smoked at all, let alone 35 years.

Hanging in there Dag! the urge still hits me some, had one on the ride home from work yesterday, lady in the car next to me was smoking and kept blowing her smoke out the window, and I kept going back and forth between REAAAAAAALY wanting one, and wanting to vomit at the smell of it...

Two weeks for my two year mark! Congrats to ALL the quitters and future quitters!
