As stated in the other Texas DS thread, my tire rubs when me and BJ ride 2 up. i didn't notice it by myself, but didn't hit any good bumps on the way home. Here is the culprit. It's the huge nut on the inside of the fender that was added when the HitchDoc trailer hitch was added many years ago. Any of you other IS riders with a trailer hitch have this same NUT?  Notice the nice groove it has added to the sidewall of the tire.  I have adjusted the shocks to the other end of the spectrum, but won't know until a test ride if that will help. It just seems that this nut is much larger than any others that we dealt with yesterday. Any thoughts? Do I take that nut off and replace it with a normal size nut and shorten the length of the bolt? I dunno, grasping at straws.... Hay  Jimmyt |

How 'bout a carriage bolt with the nice, smooth, round head inside the fender. I don' t think I've ever seen one in metric, but depending on your hitch installation your existing bolt/nut might already be "HD-style".

That nut is what came with your bike Jimmy mine is rubbing a little too maybe not as bad as yours but it is I smelled rubber coming home yesterday and yep rubbing do not have a plan yet !!! Got thye GPS wire run this morning though..

I took a 3/8, maybe 5/16, carraige bolt, and ran it thru from the inside. Nut on the outside. Works great. Same problem as you. With 2 up, it hit. Carraige bolt fixed it.
Cost, about .50

Thanks MP and Pat! I guess I will have to take that *^$#$(&*^ rail and bolts off! Man, all I hear is that is a PITA. OH well, if I want to ride 2 up, I will have to get 'er done... Hay Jimmyt |

I've had that rubbing when 2-up and it's the front fender fastener. It's just really built up. But I'm just now putting the rear end of the bike back together after servicing the splines (look like new, thank goodness) and am going to do the washer mod.

Should be able to just remove the one bolt. That is all I did. Take that one out, and stick the carraige bolt in from the inside. Do not even have to remove the tire. Easy to do. Have to get the right length of bolt though. If you have bags, be careful about the length of the bolt. I had to use one that was a little too long, and cut it off, or it would hit the lid on the hard bag.

So you're sayin if I'm REAL careful, I can just take the one bolt out, insert the carrige bolt in from the inside, insert the spacers back in the correct order, and tighten it up... Well, heck, it's worth a try! Thanks again. Hay Jimmyt |

Yep! That is exactly what I did last year at Inzane in CO. I had been riding my 97 with CT by myself, with no problem.
That was the first time we went two up, with my wife, and it started rubbing. Got a couple bolts, and just removed the one bolt, and replaced it just like you said.
Problem solved! Good luck.
