i would also be in for one.  At about $40 for a plastic cover I would easily pay $100 for a SS one.

Question: Is there a certain yr or milage these start to go bad? You guys drive in death valley a lot? I have a 97 with a little over 50k and not a ripple in site. And it's first 7 years were spent in Arizona. Also it does get a triffle warm here.

I replaced my bubbly one less than 2 years ago. The replacement has now bubbled as well.

Everyone, I have been fortunate to be  swamped at work for the past couple of years. Now we have a huge plant expansion on the horizon again. I still would love to make this happen though. If someone could send me a  complete alt cover that I could use for dimensions I'll try to work something up. Send an email thru the board and we will try to make something happen. Apologies for the delay.

Where is the alternator cover located on a 2000 I/S? Is it exposed?

Directly under the petcock.

The petcock is on the right side of the tank... the petcock switch is on the left side of the tank.
the alternator cover is kinda between the left drivers foot peg and the petcock switch. the alternator cover has the HONDA name on it

I resurected this old thread, not necessarly to be used as a 'sign up' sheet, but to see if jrb or anybody else in the Valk community had come up with a suitable stainless replacement cover.

Two years ago, I replaced my plastic cover with another plastic one.  My 'new' one looks worse than the original did when I took it off.  I have been very careful not to get any gasoline or any other chemicals on the thing, and I think it got it's first bubble when it was about a year old.

I had taken my first cover to a local small time stainless steel fabrication shop.  The man had me leave it with him and said it would be a little while before he could build a prototype, but assured me he could do it.  Honestly, I forgot about the cover.  It had my business card taped to it and he never got back with me.

When I checked on the project's progress, I found out my cover had been misplaced (thrown away).

I'm pulling my cover off today.  I'd rather run 'commando' than answer questions about the bubbles.  It's embarassing that Honda would choose to use such a poor design on such a great motorcycle, especially after they stamp their name on it.

Shockbushing Gary made sheetmetal alternator covers and sold them for $35.00.
You would have to chromed, powdercoated, or paint them. But they did not sell well.

Of course polished SS has a true appeal (even a cheapskate like me would interest me for my I/S at least).

Maybe someone could make one with a 3D printer then have them sent out for metal ones?

All of the interest in an alternator cover is very helpful. The milling of the steel molds will run about 1500.00-2000.00, steel stock impregnated with lead for molds 300.00, material and labor 75.00. Maybe the first one cost about $2500.00. If it were cheap and easy they would have been done a long time ago, but then they would blister. I'll see what I can do.

Ive been thinking about just removing mine . The best priced one i've seen was $150. The big question seems to be the price. It seems that you could sell a lot of them !

Rather than just removing, take off the wrinkled chrome plating and paint it.  The chrome plating will come off easily enough but be careful using your fingers.  The loosened plating is like a razor's edge.

I took mine off Jade some time ago.  Clearly the alternator is better off with good air circulating around it. And if it's clean, looks OK.  I thought about sanding then polishing it - you can make aluminum shine almost like chrome - but I didn't bother yet.  Other priorities.  Besides I'm a "form follows function" guy anyway.

I'm going to answer on the no side.

First, I'm looking forward to paint mine after I remove the blistered chrome.

The 2nd question would be, what is a reasonable price? I'll spell it out, I'm cheap. I'll spend on something I need, but for something I want, it's got to be a reasonable price. In this case, the replacement plastic went to what? $160 or so?, but how many are buying them or just putting up with their wrinkled one?

I was thinking more along the line of either 3D printed, or CNC designed, and make a custom one and post the plans.
