Just trying to get the final answer to this question; Do I have to pull the engine out, or can I just remove the rear cover to replace the one damaged gear I can see? I already have the starter out and have one tooth broken on the idler gear only, It looks like I may be able to pull the rear drive unit and access the rear cover to remove and repair?

Any help appreciated (in Austin Texas, manual in hand) THANKS in advance!

well you could just throw the starter away and push start it from now on, that would be easiest - sorry couldn't resist that.

i crack me up !

have u used the search function? it is your friend, don't be afraid  cooldude

I have never had the problem but from reading the post over the yrs, if its only the gear, u only have to remove the rear cover, if it broke the case gear supports inside then the engine has to be removed to replace the case. there is an old thread with pics I remember seeing.

Mine hydrolocked once. Gas leaked out of my 1/2 a$$ job I did on my petcock and must have run down the line into the motor. Like a dummy, I bumped the starter button and felt it stop then pressed it again and nothing. I tried to roll the bike forward in gear and it wasn't happening. Removed the plugs and rolled it an inch or so and it shot gas straight out the hole like a pressure washer. I guess there is no sign. Maybe a strong gas smell. I did a lot of reading on this subject and found out everything is not 100% hydrolock proof. I roll my bike forward in gear before every start from now on. So far I had no more problems.

mildew...what do you mean ?  do you roll it forward in gear with the clutch pulled in or out?  what do you think it's going to do if it is hydrolocked?  i'm just wondering how, or what this will show.

I believe he meant in gear with the clutch disengaged. Wink

Yep, in gear (3rd or 4th) just let the engine turn over once for safe measures. If its locked I don't belive the back tire would budge a fraction. ....... just playing it safe until I'm pretty confident my petcock is working good. Then I may lighten up a little

In Response To: Another hydrolock question (G-Man (Gary in NY))

this is from Rider mag sept 1988 about the '88 goldwing Gl1500.
they had the hydro-lock problem and it turned out to be the bowl vent hose was sagging. "the low spotfills with gas and prevents air circulation, much like a sink trap. without a connection to atmosphere, the float bowls pressurize and raw fuel is forced up and out of the carbs through the needle jet. From there gravity takes the fuel down the intake runners. if that cylinder has an open intake valve, hydrolock." "The article states that honda issued a Product Update kit on a fix in feb of that yr which included a metal air-vent pipe and a vacuum fuel valve."
Looking at the service manual pics in the carb section it shows the vent hoses as straight sections just laying loosely on top of other hoses. My 98's vent hoses have a 90 degree end. the end is installed into holes in the rear carb support frame.
So this might be the reason and cause of the problem for some bikes.

and a nice discussion on the above article

Hondahead,
do yourself a favor and pull the motor... It's a whole lot easier then fighting it in the bike...
From someone who has done it both ways...

Hondahead - just a side-note - there's NEVER any need for a "sorry" for any post on the forums. We ALL search a little differently, and I have spent an hour before, searching for something, finally asking for help, and someone has come up with what I was looking for in a few moments.

Also, there ARE no dumb questions on these bikes. There are idiosyncrasies that relate to this bike, and no others. It's hard to know all of them, and if you don't KNOW of them, hard to do a search.

Having manual in hand is a great first step. A great 2nd step is asking here - it has saved my butt from extra work a time or two. It has also confirmed the EXTRA work that I suspected.

Good luck - you'll learn a lot pulling the motor - I'm sure you know, but take LOT'S of pictures, then take some more!! And even more, if your memory is like mine...

Did you put a new one on it? If so, was it a Pingel?
I redid the original oem petcock. There's a link how to do it step by step with pics. Just don't forget to turn it of because it will be completly manual.
Hondahead: good luck with your project. They have a m/c salvage yard here in Atlanta. I'm pretty sure he has valkyrie parts. I can't remember the name but I will look it up if you need some parts you can't find.

I am bad about leaving it on sometimes over night.  I'd like to know about the salvage yard myself. I'm a little over 2hrs from Atlanta but it would be worth it if I needed something!

Thanks, Tony

Thanks all, I have been involved in several car and bike groups over the years including 2 strong car clubs (miata and Acura NSX), but you guys beat them all!!!!   I appreciate the help and will update after pulling the engine this weekend.
