I'm absolutely stunned. I remember the first time I heard about this guy approximately 10 years ago, Sep 11th, sitting in a bar in Korea, watching those planes fly... it changed the course of my life forever, as I'm sure it did many others. Stunned.

Geraldo says bin Ladin has been dead for about a week, the death confirmed and the body in US custody.
Obama called a news conference for 10:30 eastern time (Sunday night). Why did our president wait until Sunday night? Why not early Monday morning? Just curious... I'll be interested in the explanation for the timing.
It is now after 11:00 and Obama still hasn't shown up on the TV screen... would it be racist if I said I felt a little disrespected by the man who demanded (?) network TV time to make the announcement of last week's news then wasted over half an hour of that time without making the scheduled announcement?
I honestly wish the man could take even a moment of GOOD news and not screw it up with his arrogance.
Okay, Bobbo and SE, you can start the flaming now...

IMHO Obama's speech was short , well done and gave credit where due to the team that went in and snuffed out the bastard. Dont mind waiting a day or even a week for the news if it means the team got safely out of Pakistan and our military is ready for anything the snakes family can come up with Would have liked to seen OBL's head on a stick though but maybe we will tomorrow Ya can always hope

Sorry elraque, I'm not Bobbo or SE but what are you bitching about? This A-hole is dead after being pursued by a couple of administrations. Why are you still giving crap to Obama? Are you upset he didn't call you up first to let you know?? And we all know Geraldo has the confidential info before anyone else.

So glad it finally happened, so sorry it took so long, sure wish and hope we find out every tiny detail of how he suffered on his way down. If those (taking a risk here) "Men" that handled this task will allow it they all need to be publicly praised and awarded the bounty on that Mother"F'ers" head. I think the week was to be 100% sure it was him and get all the team and his body out of that part of the world. I want video and pictures of the firefight and his Dead frikken body. God Bless America. God Bless all those that protect us from evil.

Cut the bastard up in pieces and stuff the pieces inside the carcasses of feral hogs and bury the stuffed hogs around the perimeter of the property of "Ground Zero"... and televise the entire process for world-wide viewing.
I hope he saw it coming and didn't die quickly.

Best news of the year! The announcement of the death of a high value target is delayed for several reasons. First, after the successful operation, the zone needs to be secured. Next the body needs to be prepped and shipped (flown) back to the USA. Then an autopsy is done, and DNA testing is ordered to confirm the identity. Finally we have to examine all military options for possible retaliation. There is no gain for holding back on this type of announcement, and I'm sure it is as timely as possible. elraque: I have no need to flame you, I'll just let you fall on your own sword as usual... PS. I understand this was successful since President Obama ordered an intensified search and kill operation last week.

In the announcement, Obama said we got high confidence information about Bin Laden, and he ordered the operation.

I’ve been watching the news with all those people in the Washington mall, with the American flags all over the place. Makes me really smile! Also makes me want to see those terrorists run for their caves!!
It reminds me of those jerks shooting guns in the air celebrating 9/11. Don’t see 'em celebrating now!!
This is a great day for America.

Here's what all the sources I've heard have said.
The operation began last August, with some valuable humint (human intelligence). it progressed until this Friday evening , the President gave the green light to the operation, which took place very early this morning. A team of U.S. only special operations troops went in (with no advance warning to anyone in the government of Pakistan, thank God), and in a 40 minute firefight, killed practically all adults within the compound, including Bin Laden and one of his adult sons. There were ZERO U.S. casualties and the team was able to leave with Bin Laden's body. One report says that there was at least one GSW to his head (wonder if there were two to center mass?).
God Bless America! [This is were we should be able to insert a U.S. flag emoticon]

sandy, i don't know if they will, i was watching fox news and they showed the house that bin laden was in was on fire!! i'm pretty sure that our forces wouldn't have done that, maybe the villagers put a torch to it!! then again, maybe they did it to hide information?? who knows.
one things for sure, those people over there have a lot of respect for the "winning" army. they will remember that we faught for ten years to get this guy, and we paid ALOT of money and lives to get this piece of crap.
the thing i love is that the Pakistany government didn't know a thing about the whole thing until today!!!

Congratulations to the people in uniform who made this possible. A special mention to the Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and General Petraeus. The troops will undoubtedly miss both men who have provided superb leadership amidst the wavering tide of public and political opinion during the course of this war.

Yep I expect it too.......Since Heraldo reported it happened last week now all news sources seem to say it happened yesterday and now the body is gone............the burial at sea part is really weird. So I googled when did Bin Laden Die.........its already starting DarkMeister...........I really dont care what is the truth Bin Laden stopped being a threat a long time ago. Leadership of the terrorists has changed hands more than once since Bin Laden was in charge http://whatreallyhappened.com/WRHARTICLES/osama_dead.phpPS...I will say this though.......The Saudi family of Bin Laden will protest the burial at sea if that is what really happened. They will not protest if the WRH website is accurate because the family would have been at the funeral in 2001. So no protest in the next few days means Obama is lying his a$$ off again

TV news said he was buried at sea to prevent anyone from making his grave site into some kind of shrine.
Yahoo news said the mansion "belonged" to OBL's courier and the couriers brother, and that both were killed at the same time as OBL.
Ain't gonna argue it. Just what the news reported.

I cannot imagine for a moment that EVERYONE, from the President on down, would not have wanted to capture Osama bin Laden alive. So much intelligence to be gained. So much of everything else to be gained. That he was not taken alive says something about the difficult conditions under which our US military forces had to operate. If he's dead, he's dead... and that aint a bad thing. And if it was determined that dropping him off the back end of a boat was the best way to end the situation, I can only say that this decision was not taken lightly, and many people in the State Department, the Military, and Congress were consulted before this decision was reached.
I correct myself. I have read that the prime goal of the mission was to kill bin Laden. Don't know why, and congratulations on 'mission accomplished'.

I was pleasantly surprised that the information on his location didn't get 'leaked'. This is the first time that I take my hat off to the President of the United States . I'm not in agreement with any of his policies but he did act with Presidential responsibility and authority on this.
Of course, this WON'T be the first time that I take my hat off to the our military for a well executed mission!

i am 100% convinced that had obama call the pakistany president and asked for permision to cross the boarder, binladen would be alive. i will agree, obama did the right thing for once. this is one thing that he spent money on that was a good investment.

That was my first thought too......... Head on a pike at ground zero.. for a year or so, or until the birds were done with it. At least they should have cut it off and had it on a pike with US troops and a flag for a photo op. Dumping him in the ocean was a good idea, however.

For those interested in things like this, I found the compound in Google Maps (I found a few others listed, but they didn't look right, I found a military supplied satellite photo of the compound and cross referenced it to make sure this was really it) http://tinyurl.com/3at48u6

So much of everything else to be gained. Pure speculation on my part, but having Bin Laden as a living prisoner would have been a very risky situation. There's motivation enough with him dying a martyr's death in the eyes of his followers.
On the other hand, having him alive but having the world believe he was killed and his body discarded at sea may be the best possible scenario.
Naw! They wouldn't do that.
