Thsi is gonna seem like a strange thought but a friend of mine has terminal cancer and I went to see him last night. He only has about 3 months to live. He is getting things in order and last night he was working on "what was the last song he wanted played at his funeral". He finally settled on "THE LAST COWBOYS SONG".
On the way home last night it got me to thinking about what song I would want to be the last song played at my funeral and it has been on my mind all day to day.
Anybody else out there ever wondered about "What Song You Would Want Played At Your Funeral?"

The Topeka Fire Department Pipers will play Amazing Grace and the American Legion Honor guard will play Taps. It's a tradition. Dust in The Wind before that. Hoser

Dont want a funeral. I told my wife to throw one hell of a Wake. I want everyone to have a grand time. Celebrate my life. My troubles are gone. Save the money she would spend on a big funeral and take a vacation and spread my ashes around the places I was happiest. Mt Evans is one of those places.

Will be buried in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
So the last song will probably be TAPS.
Other than that, there will be no funeral, wake or anything else.
Told her if she defied me, I'm set up and say what the f**k all you people doing here, who sent you an invitation? Now, get lost......

I'm with sharkey on this. I want on hell of a party. I know my friends will come through for me. Hells Bells and/or Highway to Hell would be my chosen songs. If I happen to not pass on the Valk, put me in a empty bottle of Jack, well almost empty , and lay me in the saddle bag for my final ride. Spread my ashes in Spearfish Creek in Spearfish Canyon. Its been Kit and I's favorite spot the past few years. Kinda makes you think....

I just knew I just didn't want to be around when she had one. What about " stairway to heaven" by Led Zeppelin even though I am not religious.

The last song I want at my funeral would have to be The Long and Winding Road.
The last words I would like said are "Hey, look, he's breathing!" Fred.

Komm Susser Tod, J.S. Bach. Never, never, Amazing Grace , especially with bagpipes. Now that should get something started but as Rhett Butler said "Frankly I don't give a damn!"

The Aggie War Hymn. Would be neat to have all that sawing going on in the pews followed by a few "whoops".

Not gonna be a funeral for me. None. I've talked about this for years with my wife. I absolutely hate funerals and think they're the worst thing that loved ones can go through. It's hard enough on everybody to have to deal with the death in the first place and it's totally ridiculous for them to have to stand in some stupid "receiving line" for a couple of hours while everybody files by, hugs and shakes hands and tells you all about how "you know you can call me if you need anything". And one of the things I despise the most is all the people who come and stand around laughing, telling jokes, talking about old times, and generally just having a grand old reunion, while the loved ones are grieving their hearts out. And why gather all around and sing all those sad, tear jerking songs and hymns so everybody can break down and sob until somebody has to help them walk to the hearse? What a crock! Do I sound like I hate funerals? A couple of guys ahead of me talked about happy parties instead. That's not a bad idea as long as the loved ones can deal with it all. But just because your riding buddies, work mates, and old friends are all over the place while your sweet wife is hiding out in her room and crying doesn't make it a good thing. So, that's my take. I'll be cremated and unless somebody else changes the program, there will be no service or gatherings. My wife can go visit her family or friends and grieve in private.

It's written into my will as well. Song lyrics to be handed out to anyone who is there. Anyone not whistling will stay thirsty.
Along with
And this If I should ever leave you whom I love To go along the silent Way, grieve not, Nor speak of me with tears, but laugh and talk Of me as if I were beside you there, (I'd come...I'd come, could I but find a way! But would not tears and grief be barriers?) And when you hear a song, or see a bird I loved, Please do not let the thought of me be sad... For I am loving you just as I always have... You were so good to me! There are so many things I wanted still to do... So many things to say to you... Remember that I did not fear... It was just leaving you that was so hard to face... We cannot see Beyond... But this I know: I loved you so... 'Twas heaven here with you! By Islo Paschal Richardson And this HOPI PRAYER of The Soul's Graduation: Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight On the ripened grain. I am the gentle Autumn's rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die. My Spirit is still alive… Bugger the doom and gloom.

I'm kinda like RJ. I'll be buried in Biloxi National Cemetary, hopefully no time soon, so the last song will be taps followed by the sounds of motorcycle engines leaving when the commitment service is done.

Probably Jessica, one of The Allman Brothers instrumentals. That song always reminds me of walking along a creek on a spring morning. I can almost feel the dappled sunlight under the trees when I listen to it. Some Led Zeppelin played before that would be great too. I'm the oldest living member of my immediate family so there's no danger of offending anyone now.

I've always said it... just like Sharkey and Fudgie... Throw a big party, good food, open bar. Make my last party a good one. Don't waste money on a fancy box or a hole in the ground that needs "eternal care".
Maybe play "Home Sweet Home" from Motley Crue or "Home" from Daughtry (but American Idol kind of ruined that) I hope it's more of a "Stairway to Heaven" and not a "Highway to Hell" But at the close of the party... put on a bit of "Keep Me in Your Heart" by Warren Zevon and finish up with a bit of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan.

For my wandering dad, he was cremated. Sent home and buried in the family plot. We come from a long line of cowboys. Had 3 songs played. Streets of Laredo. Long Black Train. Last, Go Rest High on that Mountian.
Think that is what I want too!

For me, it would be Loreena Mckennit's version of Cymbeline. Yes, I'm a wild man.
Loreena Mckennitt Cymbeline Lyrics: By William Shakespeare (c. 1609) Fear no more the heat o' th' sun Nor the furious winters rages; Thou thy wordly task hast done, Home art gone, and ta'en thy wages. Golden lads and girls all must, As chimney-sweepers, come to dust. The sceptre, learning, physic, must All follow this and come to dust. Fear no more the frown o' th' great; Thou art past the tyrant's stroke. Care no more to clothe and eat; To three the reed is as the oak. The sceptre, learning, physic, must All follow this and come to dust. All lovers young, all lovers must Consign to thee and come to dust. Fear no more the lightning flash, Nor th' all-dreaded thunder-stone; Fear not slander, censure rash; Thou hast finished joy and moan. All lovers young, all lovers must Consign to thee and come to dust.

Funerals are not for the departed, but fore those left behind. I'd think, (my personal opinion) that the music selected should reflect more what the survivors think my life has been rather that what I thought I was.
I have my own list of music, but I won't demand it. I won't be there. I'll be long gone.
My hope would be that those left behind to celebrate my life would choose as representative a hymn that begins:
I have one deep, supreme desire That I may be like Jesus.
I fear that might instead choose something more like Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. ???

I Will Follow You into the Dark (video) album version audio (External Embedding Disabled) Beautiful song about losing the one you love and then coming to accept death. Has always meant a lot to me and I'd love to have it played. Love of mine some day you will die But I'll be close behind I'll follow you into the dark No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white Just our hands clasped so tight Waiting for the hint of a spark If Heaven and Hell decide That they both are satisfied Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you When your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black And I held my tongue as she told me "Son fear is the heart of love" So I never went back If Heaven and Hell decide That they both are satisfied Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you When your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark You and me have seen everything to see From Bangkok to Calgary And the soles of your shoes are all worn down The time for sleep is now It's nothing to cry about 'cause we'll hold each other soon In the blackest of rooms If Heaven and Hell decide That they both are satisfied Illuminate the No's on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you When your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark Then I'll follow you into the dark

I hope that at my funeral there will be two songs played, not because they are suitable funeral fare, but because they both resonate with my soul in different ways, the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah, and Bryan Adams' Open Road. Bryan Adams - Open Road (External Embedding Disabled)
