I need to replace rear brake pads on a 2000 Standard. Honda = $44. I can get Kelvar pads for $20. Lot of difference there. Anyone know anything about the Kelvar pads? TIA. Hef

What brand are the kevlar pads? Some brands don't work so well with OEM pads.

I have used EBC Kevlar pads with great sucess. But there are some that have not had the same good fortune.

I also have used the "Dunlopads" on my I/S rear, and have no complaints whatsoever.

Using other than OEM is a "roll of the dice", but Kevlar is supposed to be less abrasive on the stainless rotors on Hondas.

Good luck on whatever you choose.

Your only talking a $16.00 difference. When and if you need a brake disk-you fer dam sure AIN'T gonna find one for no $16.00.  Trying to keep in mind you only get to f-up a brake disk once. Go O E M. It's better thataway. The price of a tank of gas on my i/s fer me at least-really not worth it. That right thar be my three pennys worth. Dad gum inflation-costin some more these days ta be heard. uglystupid2 RIDE SAFE.

thicker 9.6 mm pads fit, just installed my vesrah. same braking performance as or maybe sligthly better than OEM. thicker pads = longer life, we shall see, oems went 30k for the front and I do a lot of stop and go work commuting.

from my other post http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,13708.0.html

Vesrah makes most OEM pads. The stock valkyrie pads are HH pads as are the Vesrah replacements.
vesrah shows them the same size backing plate, just thicknesses are different. Ferodo shows the same also. 8.2 mm is stock thk front,  9.6 mm is the max that will fit from what I have been told, in fact this thk is all that ferodo imports into USA. rear is 10.3 mm, don't know if they will squeeze in or not. I just ordered the vesrah 9.6mm for my bike from denniskirk. they are HH pads and highly rated as are ferodo.

I don't know whether the kevlar brakes are better or worse.  I installed a front set of aftermarket pads about 5,000 miles ago and have not observed any rotor wear or diminished braking capacity.

It seems that there is a strong bias at the VRCC forum to use only Honda OEM brake pads with Honda rotors (after all, the cost is less than $100 difference).

On the other hand, there is also a lot of: "why waste money buying Honda OEM filters when the $2.00 Walmart filter will work just as well (and you can save $5.00)."

I purchase aftermarket brake pads for all my vehicles, including my Valkyrie.  This is not rocket science.  I sincerely doubt that only Honda (or the Honda OEM supplier) has the ability to produce brake pads for a Honda motorcycle.

[I will now get off my soap box and shut up.]

I purchased some EBC pads for my IS and I found them really noisy when I braked.  Almost sounded like I had a rock stuck in the pad, I checked and I didn't.  I put OEMs back on and the brakes are much quieter and the stopping distance seems the same.

I tried EBC pads and didn't like them at all.

They were noisy and had noticably less braking power.

I went back to OEM's before the EBC's were even half worn.

I recently replaced the front brakes with a set of these:

They aren't branded but the quality looks good and for the price ($30 for 2 sets) I thought what the heck.

So far so good, I've got about 1000 miles on the 1st set and everything feels as good as OEM.

That is exactly the set I purchased, but before the price drop (I paid $45 for two sets).  I think this is a great deal, but I do not want to rain on the parade of the OEM cheerleaders.

I'm not knocking the OEM's, especially after my bad experience with the EBC's.

These looked like good quality and with them priced so low I couldn't see any reason not to take a chance on them.

So far, I have absolutely no complaints with them.

NOW, what I would like to know is can anyone explain the price difference between OEM fronts ($36) and rears ($22)?

And what is the difference between rear pads on a Standard ($36) vs rear pads on an Interstate ($23)?

If I remember right, the I/S pads do not have the white foam backing that the standards do.

BTW, I wore out the front rotors and replaced with EBC rotors and OEM pads do not work well on these rotors.  I went to EBC HH sintered pads and these work well with the EBC rotors.  The EBC rotors also rust up pretty quickly where the OEM hardly ever rusted.

This is an example of the trap that branded companies fall into when they have their products produced in China. The Chinese will start making unbranded but identical knockoffs as soon as they can build a new plant. They have no respect for patents or intelectual property. Check the galfer front rotors for about 450.00 for a pair and then check Ebay for the identical items for 139.00 a pair. Galfer and many other companies has made an unreversable strategic mistake.
