Friday Pics Left Bellaire for a longer trip today with Free Pass and Margo from California - lunch on Mackinaw Island after a trip up the coast on 119 next to Lake Michigan, then through the Tunnel of Trees and then onto Mackinaw City to catch the ferry to Mackinaw Island. Typical lunch ride for the DFW group - 200 miles, eat, come back. Once you arrive on the Island, you not only know that bicycles and horses are the only modes of transportation allowed - there is something in the air that alerts you to the horses' presence upon debarkation. The job of shovel guy in this town must be lucrative! Anyway, onto the pictures. Picture at the start of the Tunnel of Trees - this was the last picture before the batteries died. About 5 miles after this, in some nice twisties, found a lot of sand in the road. I managed to brake and get around it. Free Pass and Margo did a one foot sideways slide through the sand. We slowed it down after that. After buying new batteries in Mackinaw City, took the ferry to the island. This is the Mackinac Bridge as seen from the ferry The Grand Hotel and another boatload of tourists A picture of the harbor/marina area The UPS truck RainMaker presents.... the Grand Hotel. Free Pass (Dick Britton) and Margo at the Grand Hotel. Look at the ceiling of the porch - it's blue so that when birds fly in, they think it's the sky and then they just fly back out. (that tidbit courtesy of Casper) We didn't get any inside shots..... Once past the tourist traps, there are some nice homes that are from the 1800s, all meticulously maintained. Rush hour traffic A lighthouse in the lake The flowers up here are simply beautiful. Another incredible home Hotel shuttle One thing that surprised me is how clear the water of Lake Michigan is. I was never expecting to see water as clear as I've seen anywhere in the world After blasting back down I-75, we arrived at 5:05PM (that made it an 8 hour, 35 minute trip) at Shanty Creek. Went inside to the daily meeting, then went to eat dinner at Chief's, where they had an "all you can eat" fish dinner for $8 (VRCC got a $2 discount from the $10 normal price) plus $1 draft beers. We must have overwhelmed them - this picture was taken about an hour before the food was served. By that time, the "new" batteries had died so I have no more shots of Friday. The rechargable batteries are recharged so will see what we can find today. No plans to ride - just hang around with all the fine people here. For me, the Inzane experience isn't exactly what I expected. It is more. It's like walking into a room full of strangers who really aren't strangers. They become your instant friends. In a way, it is like going to a Facebook convention and meeting all the people that you have corresponded and read about and learning more about them, rounding out your knowledge of that person. It is about you also becoming known to those people. For example, Willow the admin is not the fun loving, crazy Willow you meet in person. Would Willow the admin ride 5 circles around a flagpole just because it was there? You can't hear Motomamma's distinctive, infectious laugh through a forum or experience one of her delicious desserts. You do get to see more Valkyries in one location than anywhere else (although GOTF seems close to me). You get to ride in new areas and experience new sights. It's a good thing to do at least once. Work your plans to attend if you've never done so as it really brings home the love we all have of the great motorcycle we are so fortunate to own and ride. Later RainMaker

Inzane Saturday nite Saturday night was the final event of Inzane, the awards dinner celebration. We started with a salad buffet Then onto the main course of baked potato slices, corn on the cob, bbq chicken and brisket. Yummmm Then dessert - cherry or apple pie. Motomamma getting ready to enjoy her meal. The grand prize was the dealer neon Valkyrie sign. The items around the sign were for the raffle. We had people there from all over People were really focused on those raffle tickets Others concentrated more on each other Inzane raised $7500 for the local charity. It was a nice way to end this celebration of Valkyrie. Sunday, we all depart. Most will be going at 6 or 7am. I plan to sleep until I wake up without an alarm, have breakfast and then head towards the metromess. With any luck, most of my ride will be early in the cooler states and later at night in the warmer climates of home. With any luck, I'll get the iron butt taken care of on the way home. But if I get tired, I'll just stop. Posthumous awards are among the least desired. Next year Inzane will be in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. So anyone in Texas who doesn't go this time won't have a closer opportunity again. Safe riding to all. I am outta' here! RainMaker

Oh woot woot WOOT!!! That makes me VERY happy!!! Already plotted a route from the Metromess through back roads up to Talihena, across the Talimena Scenic Parkway and on to Eureka Springs! I sure hope things have calmed down enough on the home front that I'll be able to make it next year! Did they give any indication of the time of year though? Still gonna be pretty warm around there in July... Regardless, I'll be there if at ALL possible for that one!

Is that official, or are you just messing with us? They don't usually have final absolute decisions made at this point. (not to say that I'd call you a troublemaker, but... you can be a troublemaker sometimes...) (:

+1 Great to see the pics! Meanwhile, we're doin' what we can to wear out the heat wave while ya'll are gone. There is even a chance it might not break 100 today Whooo Hoo!
I've totally failed at breaking the heatwave... day 30 of 100+ degree weather and a not-too-promising forecast: Tue: 106 degrees Wed: 109 Thu: 106 Ride safe coming home. Night traveling is looking better as you get closer to the Megamess

RM, you should have went another 164 miles and earned a Butt Burner 1500 also. A man's got to know his limitations (HD) You have 36 hours from the first fill-up. Take a nap and ride 82 miles out and back after sundown.

The ride back was fun also. The first day after we left Bellaire, MI, Hayhauler, Disco, Scott and I met up with Fstop in Saint Joseph, MI. He was getting gas at the same place we stopped at. Together we rode to Effingham, IL where Fstop split off and continue south towards Memphis, TN. We continued towards St Louis, MO. We stopped in Rolla, MO to spend the night. 720 miles for that day. After I went to sleep. ........ plans were made to take a tour of Eureka Springs in Arkansas. Unfortunately Scott couldn't go.. something about work.. he left somewhere around Springfield, MO and continued toward OK. We went south on 65 thru parts of the Ozarks into Arkansas. After we checked out Eureka Springs and ate lunch we continued south taking all the back roads to Mena, AR. The roads and scenery are fantastic. I can't wait to go back next year. In Mena Disco knew off this road called Telimena Scenic Drive or AR-88. Not a bad way to finish the day. Not only was it a nice ride, it was about 20 degrees cooler than in Forth Smith,AR where it was 111 when we came thru there. They set a new record high that day. Thanks Disco Dave.
