i have a bad back-fire from 1200 to 3500 rpms. #6 cyclinder is the culprit- it has compression, been desmoged, carbs cleaned, plug firing. any suggestions.

The plug may fire at idle when you check it but under load it can still miss.
How did you determine that #6 is the problem? If you are sure it's #6 try changing that plug and see; since they're not expensive you may be wise to replace them all.

Check the vacuum line for the petcock, it should be connected to the #6 intake, the hoses like to split at the ends and leak. May try moving the coil pack for that cylinder set and see if the backfire moves with it.

My Valk started to backfire on overrun (closed throttle from higher revs).  It was from water in the gas--I cured it with about 1/2 cup of methyl hydrate (gas line anti-freeze) in the tank.

It has been a long time since I've heard methyl hydrate used for methyl alcohol.
