I'm old school. I was raised believing that earrings were a woman's thing. But nowadays, I see more and more macho types sporting one or more earrings. Opinions are all over the place on this one but I was wondering what the general forum consensus was and whether or not those who wear earrings might be concerned that others may think something's not quite right with you.

Our modern society has made ear rings a "women" thing for the most part.  Historically men wore ear rings without being "labeled___________" fill in the blank.  I think its like tatoos.....you dont have to be a crimnal to have some ink now a days.

Our culture has become very judgemental and rigid and I dont think that is a good thing.  Years ago I too felt ear rings were NOT for "normal" guys, but have repented of my brainwashed way of thinking.  I could see me getting an ear pierced someday... if I came to want that

Bottom line is to be true to who you are and what you wear wont really be an issue because you wont care what others think.  Try to "put on" who you are trying to be and what you wear will always be an issue because you are trying to impress others and it rarely works

I don't have a problem with earrings, although I'll admit gauging kinda bother me for no real reason...

Well, I guess the reason is anything someone does to permanently mutilate themselves bothers me. I've always had the urge to run up and put a padlock through someone's gauge when I see one.

(Standard disclaimer - I still believe do what you want to yourself, not saying people shouldn't gauge their ears, just saying I find it kinda silly, if not revolting...)

I keep telling my girls now that I've been retired for a while I think it's time to let my hair grow into a ponytail and get my ears pierced. Their answer....."yeah, right dad."  They know it will never happen and they're right. As for me, I don't care one way or another if someone wants to mutilate themselves. An earring is one thing, but I've seen a number of bad cases with a pierced tongue. The human mouth isn't exactly the cleanest spot on the body.

The ring in my ear is called 'tinnitus'.

Didn't plan it.

BUT, I did earn it.

Occured after stupidly shooting at rats in an empty grain silo with a .44 mag when I was younger. uglystupid2

The gun is gone the ringing is still there.   Cry

Do I wonder if some people think I'm "not quite right"? No because I know some people think that and it probably has nothing to do with the 4ga curved barbells hanging from my earlobes. Of all of the possible reasons...

I have a buddy that used to give me crap because I have both ears pierced and he only had the left one which to me is the equivalent of a mullet.

Him: "You know having both done is for chicks."
Me: "You know, having only one done makes you look weak and indecisive."

He now has both ears done.

Dawn has several in her ears, a small nose stud, a nip and her girly parts pierced. She used to have the tongue but but she let that close for reasons she's never fully explained although I think it made her self conscious at work.

For many years I believed that the origin of male earrings was pirates. They'd cut their earlobe and insert wedding rings from the women they'd raped and killed. Then I was informed the ancient Egyptians pierced ears when they were making jewelry out of gold. Not for me but I don't mind if a man has one. Two leads me to guessing about other stuff.

An earring would look very out of place in my office.
The only jewelry I wear is a wedding ring, a watch and a gold cross on a chain out of sight under my shirt.

I wear a small diamond, or black onyx stud in one ear when I'm not at work. I could easily get away with it at work, but I choose to keep my professional side separate from my recreational side.  coolsmiley angel

I take mine out at work too. We're not supposed to wear them per policy, but I'd take em out anyway. I once got one of my hoops caught on a fastener while drilling some holes in a Gulfstream wheel well. I was lucky that I felt it before tearing it out.

I got my ear pierced 40yrs ago after I got divorced.  I loved marriage but I just couldn’t stand my wife.  I did it for personal meaning which most people wouldn’t understand any way.  In fact at that time you were looked down on for having one in your ear.  But truth is I can take my ear ring out any time, but tattoo’s are forever.  I know it bothers people that I wear one, but it bothers me when I see a tie wearing pencil neck people with tattoos think they are the world’s bad boy on two wheels.  Oh well!! This is free America and frankly I don’t care what people do as long as it doesn’t become my problem.

Like most young men, I well remember reading Playboy every chance i got when in high school.
Is the Playboy Advisor is still running?  I haven't leafed through a PB in a long time...  Anyway, probably back in 1970-time frame a guy wrote to the Advisor asking which ear he and his biker buddies should get pierced, they wanted to do it right, and they didn't know what it meant if they had a right or left ear pierced.
The Advisor wrote back telling him he must be a candy-assed biker if he cares what anybody else thinks about his earring.
The Playboy Advisor was very wise.

Earrings are one of those things I just don't get. Outside of some primitive tribes I used to read about in National Geographic (back before Al Gore invented the internet) I can't fathom why anyone would want to poke a hole in their body and then stick a piece of metal in it, men OR women  ???

Now... slightly related one thing that DOES bother me is seeing a tiny baby with earrings...

Me and the spousal unit had a bit of a kerfuffle over that issue when our daughters were born. She insisted that since the girls would 100% want pierced ears later, we should just do it immediately so it's done. I insisted that, when they were old enough to understand the decision and articulate a request to have it done, THEN they could have it done, but not until they were able to understand and consciously ask for it to be done.

I’m NOT going to comment on this post or state my own views (it’s the whole “turning over a new leaf” thing!) Having said that, I have to ask; ISN’T THEIR ANY SALIORS HERE? By centuries old tradition the following is held fast;

1.Sailors got their ears pierced because it helps improve eyesight (I think its an acupuncture lore, but is held true by most saliors!)
2.A black pearl earring for survivors of a sinking ship.
3.Golden earrings were used as a means of ensuring they were buried properly should they die at sea or in a foreign port.
4.In modern times a brass earring denoted a survivor of a ship sinking.
5.One left ear piercing for crossing each of the Equator, Artic Circle, and Antarctic Circle. (There are also earring designations for going around both southern capes!)
6.Earrings were thought to keep spirits from entering through the ear.

Just remember you men with earrings....

Your "coolness factor" is inversely proportional to your age.

60 year old guys with earrings are just creepy.  Undecided

This new thing, beyond guys with earrings, referred to above... where they stick the discs and such in their earlobe...    Shocked  uglystupid2

When I work side-jobs that involve checking IDs, etc, I usually ask the guys with holes in their ears that you can stick a finger through if they get many second interviews. Most of them take offense to this for some reason  police  2funny

That depends on the person. Some old doods can rock earrings convincingly.
