Now that I've got this National Park/Monument Pass it's burning a hole in my pocket and I'm looking at new undiscovered adventures.

I've always had Mount Rushmore on my list of things to do and looking at a map of the Black Hills it looks like a must do now! Looks like there are a boatload of Natl Parks in that area alone.   cooldude

So I'm looking for suggestions, feedback etc from anyone who's been or heard tell.

Not sure when I'm going but it has defintely moved up on "the list" and for this summer. I really don't have any interest in the big Sturgis rally so whenever that is going on I don't plan to be there.

Looks like it's only about 700 plus miles from my area.  Wink

Thanks.

Gary, Mt. Rushmore is a "must see" while in the area, but is kind of touristy.
I've camped in the Badlands Nat. Park in july & the campground is cool & shaded.
The Badlands @ night, to me, look like pics of the moon.
There are many interesting towns in the Black Hills. Go, will not be disappointed.
Theodore Roosebvelt NP is in the neighborhood also.

One the way, check out Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Chinle,Az..
FREE camping.
There's also a pretty big ditch out that way that's worthwhile, especially the No. Rim. Great camp ground with 1/2 price camping on your NP Pass.
Then on to Monument Valley & Valley of the Gods UT........... over 8,000 acres of BLM land to run & play in. Did i forget to mention FREE camping?
Arches,& Canyonlands NPS are nearby.
Grand Tetons/Yelowstone NP's are on the way.

Shoot, from No. N.M., I'm guessin' anywhere No. of Santa Fe, a 2500 mile round trip should take you to most of these places.
Happy trails,
the hobo

We swung thru the BlackHills on our way back up from Inzane 6. Stayed at the KOA in Custer for a couple of nights. It also was on my to do list that summer.  cooldude

The lighting of Mt. Rushmore at dusk is also nice to see.

the road from Mt Rushmore to Custer state park is cool.  There are 3 tunnels in the road that frame the faces of Mt Rushmore when you look through them.  Also, we liked the Reptile Gardens, which is closer to Rapid City. And don't forget Deadwood and Devils Tower, not to far away.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Plan a few days to really enjoy it. If you don't want to do it during the Rally in aug, don't go a week before or after. Also stay away from the week of July 4th. There is a Sturgis Riders Rally going on in town. Might not have alot of people but will be quite a few.
Hit the Badlands. Might as well go to Wall while you are there. Nice to see once. Do it early in the morning. Custer St park with the wildlife loop is good. Since your there hit Needles Hiway and Iron Mountain Rd. Rushmore and CrazyHorse. This is all doable in a day or so.

Once in the north part of the Hills hit Vanocker Canyon road into Sturgis or Nemo Rd. Nice Roads. Take 14A from Sturgis to Deadwood. Lots to see there. Then take Spearfish Canyon. They say take it north bound and you'll see more. Spearfish is a big town with a Honda dealer and your normal town stores so if you need anything stop here. Go on west bound on I-90 and stop at the Vore Buffalo jump by Beuhla Wy. Then swing up through alladin Wy and through Hulet onto Devils tower. Its a nice loop. While there you can swing up into Alzada MT. Nothing there but a gas station. Leave there and head back to Bel Fouche Sd and back into Sturgis. Alot of biker bars in town for some reason.  Shocked Visit some. Really neat. Stop on main st and visit some shops. Out past the Full Throttle is Bear Butte Mountain. Not alot to see but it really is a must stop. You can't miss it as you get near Sturgis. Only mountain in town.
Bring rain gear and a leather jacket with you. It can be 90 deg at some parts and frosty the next. Storms are expected about everyday. Try and leave the Hills before it gets dark. But if not watch for large critters. There are alot. Don't worry if you miss stuff. We have been there 4 times now and I have not seen it all yet. This is what will bring you back!
