Considering installing a batwing fairing on a 2001 Standard instead of a windshield. Any comments on the down side of riding with a fairing?
Anybody ever put one on, disliked it, and then removed it?
If so, why?

I had a Valkyrie specific Hoppe fairing... it used the OEM windshield hardware and
became part of the bike, slick, no fabrication, easy on, easy off... but it wasn't
weightless. I never thought I'd part with it, but I rode with it off (for just a little bit,
I thought) when I got my lightbar. I had to admit to myself that I liked the way
my bike felt better without it.

I stuck a MS batwing on my tourer, was an SOB to get mounted right. Finally did.
Seems like it was meant to fit a harley, not a metric.

I've also had trouble with the top fork mounts breaking. Had to order two sets.
Glad it's a lifetime warranty on them.

On the plus side, it keeps the hands a little warmer in the cold air, looks very cool
in place of the oem windshield.

All of the years that I have ridden, I have never rode with a fairing. My main concern is the loss of close quarters field of vision.
I to like the way an open bike feels.
The problem now is that after 2 or 3 hundred miles, I am beat up.
The pictures I have seen do show the bike well with a batwing.
It appears that by adding the correct highth shield you get both protection and a clean look.

I used to have an OEM windshield on my Valk, but now I have a Woodys fairing on it and I couldn't be any happier.

I really like the Memphis because it is 30 seconds, on or off, no tools, without a lot of ugly bracketry showing when riding with it off. My front is raked 6 degrees and I have a VTX headlight and headlight extender.

dog,

i have an IS so no batwig needed.  i do have one on my VTX1300 and really like it - quick on and off (quick release) - no close-in vision problems - a bit warmer than memphis shades - all-in-all works well.  i also have a short, tinted shield for it that you can have for shipping costs - I think it's about 8 inches but would measure exactly if you are interested.

Fits like a glove and comes off easy for cleaning behind every once in a while.
It is the one I bought for my Volusia but due to having to relocate the headlight to the same position as the newer C50, I didn't install it.
For the Valk, I just ordered a set of brackets to fit.

I think it made the bike feel lighter in the front end.
I do find buffeting to be a problem at times and will be working on mounting the set of NC lowers that that I have in my possession over the winter.
I also have the deflectors the go right on the fairing.

Mine had a Harley batwing from the mid 80's on when I bought it.  I think you would like it, protects your hands more than just shield.  I love it.  I did add Memphis lowers which stopped buffeting and it took three tries to find a windshield with the perfect height.  This fairing does allow for some windshield height adjustment, I don't know if they all do.

I mounted a MS Batwing a few years ago, added the lowers and already had the fork wings, so there is not a lot of buffeting at all. I love this thing. I had heard of problems with the mounting proceedure, but I never experienced any of that. It goes on/off easily to clean stuff. My only issue is with the windshield height, since the top is right in my field of vision, but it's very dry in the rain and keeps the blast off your chest.

It is light weight and acually smooths the ride. I painted it to match and would do it again.

I have a Memphis Shades batwing on my Valk as well.

I love the way it looks. As others have said, easy on and off. Not so much on the initial install, that was a bit tougher. I have a short tinted shield installed now...looks great, but to truly be really functional it needs to be taller. Somewhere in the garage I have a taller clear shield for it that I need to try out for cooler weather.

The only downside I can think of offhand is around 115 mph I get a side to side shimmy out of the handlebars. The bike doesn't do it without the batwing installed so it has to be turbulence from that.

I liked my oem shield due to it offered alot more rain protection. I love my hd batwing due it cutting the wind far better then the sheild. The rain protection sucks. I only ride in the rain out west (mostly) and its usually warmer so it dont frezze my face like it does back in Ind. The field of vision bothered me only for a month, then you get use to it.

My 2002 Standard has the Memphis Shades batwing with lowers.  Installation is straight forward and there is wiggle room for adjustments.  You can get windshields with other heights and colors, and the batwing is paintable.  As for performance, it is super.  The Valk runs like it's on rails...wind buffeting not an issue.  Best accessory on the bike!

Woodman it looks great  cooldude The paint matches your home and lanscaping well too. When I was ordering, it stated the lowers were not available for the Valkyrie and would interfere with blinkers. Looks like that was an easy blinker-slip adjustment?

I have the lower deflectors on mine and all you do is slide the signal lights down.
Caution though ....... not so low that you hit the rad cap on full turn. Don't ask me how I know!  Embarrassed
I tore the rubber isolator .......... $45 for a set of those.

factory turn signals are connected to the headlight mount. moving them more than about a 1/4" allows them to hit the radiator. i went with a harley ultra lightbar and turn sigs.

I've noticed that y'alls fairings are not sitting on the headlights very good. There is a gap. When i had my stock headlight on mine, i had a 2"extention from XF6 mounted. It let the fairing sit down more on the headlight

There is zero gap on mine.
As the fairing is some what universal, the front edge might not be as low as it could be, but it has a shroud inside right at the front that I had to put a thin piece of felt on to protect the bucket from the potential chaffing from vibration.

I installed one on my HD Road King and loved it. I had a short dark windshield, it looked cool but got too much buffeting from the wind, so I orded a 12" gradiant and loved it.

I found it needed the Bakers airwings to properly stop the buffeting. I have an ultimate seat as well that raises me a bit so I needed the 12" windshield. I see over it by 2-3" so it's ok.  For the cost I find it a nice solution and comfortable.

Just mounted mine last night. With the OEM windshield hardware / cable keepers, the uppers had to come off.  Cobra lightbar had to be moved down to make room for the brackets. That also leaves the upper headlight supports hanging in the air.  No big deal really.  Honestly, mounting was a real bitch. Love the look so far. Soon as them temp gets above freezing and they new Riken Raptor tire is installed I'll see how I like the feel.

My bike came with a Memphis windshield then I put on a Honda one and now a HD fairing and would not be with out it. You have more windshield options and other accessories and you will need the fork wind deflectors to help buffeting.

Yes it is a Harley fairing you can find them on e-bay or local HD parts place. I can not take credit for mounting set up bought 5 years ago already done from e-bay and I made some modifications to it. No need to re-locate gauges and can be removed easily you actually remove the inner part first.  It also has 12 volt sockets for cell phone and GPS. Next time I remove it I will take pictures of mounting set up.
