I've used a white lithium grease and Bel Ray waterproof.

Probably any kind of grease would be fine.  Some light aircraft I used to work on used the same type of cable to drive the Tach.  The Piper book said to use moly grease on it.

Yep, I like to work/rub in a light grease. Used to always use white lithium, but I just don't have it laying around anymore.

Also, just thought I'd mention, be careful when re-installing the drive end. That little plastic thing is pretty fragile.

I now have speedometer and odometer readings again! YeaY!

The replacement cable seemed to be all metal including the part that interacts with the blade at the front wheel.

I think what he meant was that the recessed retaining screw at the wheel-end goes through a plastic flange and can crack it open if tightened too much.
