If it's good enough for the Duke it should be good enough for me. June in S.D. would be better than August for sure. It gets hot out there.

Maggie Valley

VOAI had a wonderful ride in there a few years ago only 720 miles from my house
I would take a few days next time just so I can do the whole BRP again

the Blue Ridge Parkway
Hellbender
Cherahola
The national forests Cherokee
129
421
Heck even the interstate 26 is a great road after the fog burns off in the morning

End of June works for me

Asheville is a nice suggestion with a lot of road options. I would probably secure a second distance award as I would be coming out of Palm Springs, CA. A possible timing suggestion would be the first week of June as a lot of West Coasters may be doing the Run to Washington DC for Memorial Weekends "Rolling Thunder" event. This may enhance attendance and give us a little better weather temp wise.

Two other suggestions would be Branson, MO. I realize it was in Eureka a couple years ago. Branson has so much to offer and along with great riding roads they offer a wide variety of Activities and destination sights.

Another would be Rapid City, SD the first weekend of June. The Crazy Horse memorial hosts a "Volks March that weekend which is the only weekend the memorial is open for visitors to walk to the top of this great project. It could also be a charity for us to consider as this project is to be used as a backdrop for a future Native American University. It has been built without a dollar of federal funding and I am sure they would consider our donation as a great investment.

Have been in the tour and travel industry for 14 years now and would be willing to help with planning if it would be useful.

Thanks for a great first event for me,

I rode 1707 miles for #13, though combining it with a chance to see my Sis helped sell the trip to the wifey. Not sure I'd like to do that again, so my vote would be S.D. in May or June. But I do have relatives in Ohio, and was stationed in Florida, all good excuses, if it comes to that, lol.

I vote for Panama City Beach, FL.... looks like the farthest south it's been is AR and TN, and while I'm from AR, and have family in TN; I love visiting PCB.
They already hold Thunder Beach there twice a year in the Spring and Fall, and the area is EXTREMELY bike friendly, with tons of hotels and local house rentals available.
My first recommendation is for PCB in September - this is when the water is almost PERFECT - when the rain has passed through, and it's not so hot you can't stand it.
Otherwise, I'll follow suit with the recommendations for Asheville.. just did a ride up that way and stayed in Robbinsville. Even visited Wheels Through Time while I was there as well; which is well worth the visit!

The black hills are not hot in July, I have been there a lot, but the VRCC hasn't had met there.  Seems I always wind up there when I go on a riding binge.  Hoser  ???

I'll 2nd Hoser's recommendation for the Black Hills, just don't go the 1st week of August that is the Sturgis shindig.    It really starts a week prior and goes a week past.

I'd like to see the Grand Canyon before I die, so anywhere close to a good view would be nice.  But, in early June instead of late July.  I would rather ride in rain than heat/humidity.

If you hit the Grand Canyon in early June you'll likely miss most of the rain--monsoons roll in 'round the 4th of July. . . Usually, that is. Ever since Al Gore screwed up the weather with his stupid inconvenient truths, who knows?

New Orleans great food, great riding in the plantation country 45 minutes away, tons of entertainment. ground zero at LeRichelieu hotel they have their own parking lot for the Valkyrie rodeo. overflow hotel the chateau also in the French quarter with free parking with a AAA membership.  I know it sounds pretty crazy but you would have more fun there in july than anyplace you have ever been for an inzane.

I like NOLA but July?!  uglystupid2  April. MAYbe May. . . heat, humidity make freep a smelly boy.

I'm an understanding guy. Really, I am.

I understand that the likely population center for VRCC members is probably somewhere around um, Roanoke Virginia, say.

I understand that in order to make an event like Inzane spectacularly wonderful, you need a lot of people to come.

I understand that the bulk of VRCC members probably can't make the ride from somewhere 'round Roanoke to say, the Mormon Tabernacle.

Now it's your turn to be understanding. . .

There are a few of us VRCC-ers (?) well west of not only Roanoke but the Big Muddy and even the Rocky Mountains! I dunno how many but I do know, as one of those guys, Ohio, North Carolina, even New Orleans is as much a burden on us wild west VRCC-ians (??) as coming west is to the settled eastern VRCC-ites (???).

Maybe it's time for a western version of Inzane. . .we could call it TotallySane. . . urr, maybe not.

Anyway, we could start it small-ish and let it grow, much like the original InZane.

Maybe an early spring ride into someplace semi-reachable in the west. . . Reno? Vegas? Williams AZ (gateway to the Grand Canyon)?
(NOT Ely, Nevada--300 miles of dead straight roads in every direction.}

Frisco was pretty good, but maybe Colorado Springs--l'il closer to the east. . .

So, mid to late summer ride--Inzane--in the east, early to mid spring ride--WesterZane?--in the west.

Is there a VRCC-ulan (oh, God, make it stop.) map of where we are anywhere? Anyone want to make one in like  your spare time or something? T'would be useful for figgerin' this stuff out.

Whaddya think?

I see you are from Colorado.

Someone from Alaska comes down every year.

Several people come over from Colorado, your state.

Several people come over from California.

They come over from New Mexico.

They come over from Arizona.

So I doubt like the dickens if they are going to go somewhere for a single rider.

Maybe you should get ahold of Damon Kinter (your state rep) and tell him you'd like to join in his group that goes to all InZanes.

I'll get off my Soap Box now Carl.

(Paraphrase: A bunch of people come from long-ways away to eastern Inzanes.)

So I doubt like the dickens if they are going to go somewhere for a single rider.

<snip>

Yep. People from all over go to Inzane.

You listed a lot people that rode a long way to go to Inzane. Do you mean to say those folks from Alaska and California and so forth wouldn't go if it was closer?
That doesn't seem to make sense to me. I'm just wondering what your logic is there.

That aside, not everyone that wants to go can afford either the money, the time or both.

You misunderstand me if you think I just want the Valkyrie world to come to me.
I could swing the trip to Inzane. If it ends up anywhere within 300 miles of Pittsburgh I probably will--got some people around there I'd like to visit anyway.

But that's irrelevant. My situation is not universal. Some people work. Some people have time commitments. Some people just flat can't get back to Ohio or North Carolina or even Louisiana. Why not something out west for those folks?

I'm not saying Inzane goes away, far from it. It is, after all, a defining feature of this club.
I'm just wondering if it's practical to have another event in the west, not to replace Inzane, but to add to all of our options.

What's the downside to having two annual meets, one east, one west? Do you suppose an event out of the east six months out will hurt the attendance of the other? I doubt it.

What say the rest of you?

Start one up!  get it going.  Don't wait for others.

Do like Joe does.  Put a ride/get together together, tell people about it here and on VOAI site.

It will probably start small, but if you do it right, it will grow.

There was a Valkyrie get together in the west earlier this fall.  Talked about on VOAI forums.

Good Luck to you.

I'm thinking about it. I've been PM-ing F6gal about a li'l local ride.

As regards my post up above, I was thinking a fair bit further west than SW Colorado, Nevada, California even and I'd not want to try and put anything together from this far away.

We went there the last week of July and stayed a month this year.  Temperatures were in the 60's every morning and one day was 58.  Daytime riding was mid 80's until you got up on the BRP then it dropped about 10 degrees.  I understand that there were only two out West, but there are a LOT of us between the Mississippi River and the East Coast.

Saw an article in Rider or Cruiser mag on Top 5 roads. There's a 180 mile stretch that hits WV, PA and another state that I can't recall right now, but the roads and scenery looked great and plenty of real estate to choose from for amenities central to wherever ground zero might be.

I would vote for Maggie Vally/Asheville as well. Although the last time I had the pleasure of visying that area, last weekend in May 2003 a minivan turned left in front of me. Not sure what the occasion was but I had put the Valk in the back of my pickup. Not sure if it was Maggie Vally or what but spent the rest of the weekend comfortable numb from Vicki's marguritas and Jack and cokes from someone whom I cannot remember. But what the heck. What are the chances that same girl is at the same intersection making that same stupid left turn LOL

:cooldude:Totally agree, the roads from the area will not have as much trafffic during those months ans it's also within reach of Sedona, Jerome, Cottonwood and the Skull Valley...with well priced hotels scatter in the region for those who venture out or ride in early or stay.  Although a new member to VRCC, being a Valkyrie rider since 1998 it provides an abundance of scenery.
Page AZ or Kanab UT. In late May or early June.
Temps are great, 70’s to mid 80’s because this is high plains desert 4300 ft above sea level.
Roads aren’t full of curves but the sights and possible day trips are fantastic.

Within a 150 miles
Lake Powell
Zion National Park
Bryce Canyon National Park
North Rim Grand Canyon
Monument Valley (A bucket list must see at dawn and Sunset)
Kodachrome Basin State Park
Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park
Meteor Crater
Rainbow Bridge National Monument
Ghost Towns

Hell, just the ride there would be worth it. Think of the sight as an ever increasing herd Dragons converge on Route 66 as they ride west...

Never fly.   Sad

Didn't you know it's heresy to suggest a ride more than a couple days from the east coast?  Wink
