Author Topic: How much brake fluid??  (Read 954 times)

I just drained my front brakes and rebuilt the calipers.  It's back together now, and I'm trying to fill and bleed the lines.  So far I've gone through a 12 oz bottle, and the amount of air coming out of the bleed lines is as much as when I started.  No air is getting in, so I assume I just keep going.  Any tricks, or advice?

You sure its air coming out? Some times it looks like air getting out but its not. Usually its just air leaking back from your mity-vac. At least this has been my case every time I do mine. If your sure no fluid has gotten below the hole in the resv, your good.

You using a mity vac?
If so, Try doing it the old fashioned way.
Also, are your brakes working?
I have changed my clutch and my front brakes fluid and all it took was 1 12oz bottle.

use a large syringe and surgical tubing and force fresh fluid "UP" from the bleeders to the M/C...just make sure there is adequate room so as not to overflow the reservoir....

also, it occasionally helps to crack open the banjo fittings and allow brake fluid to wet the internal parts...then re-torque to spec.

Thanks for the help, guys.  Yes, I was using a miti vac.  It sure LOOKED like the air was coming out of the bleed valve, but it must have been sucking air in from the outside.  58Woody, I did it the old fashioned way and all was good!!  Why do I buy these things when the old fashioned way works?!? Grin

As the final step, you might try tying the brake lever to the grip and leave it sit overnight.  I used to think this was an old wives' tale as I never noticed any difference with my Valkyrie (but I never completely drained the system).  But when I replaced the brake lines on my '82 SilverWing, I could not believe the difference it made.
