Went to Wendys this eve to pick up a chicken sandwich, paid with a twenty dollar bill, the clerk looked at it and said, we cannot accept this bill it is too old. It was dated 10 years ago. They have installed a money storage unit from Brinks, $20's and larger bills get put into it, sort of like a drop box, it will not accept any older bills. Has a scanner that rejects them. Manager gave me a ration of guff, so I told her to stick the sandwich in the brinks box or any other place she could find to stick it, and I left. I mean what the hell, good money is no good any longer unless it is less than 5 years old.  tickedoff

Wild guess here, but I'd bet it's their way of dealing with counterfeit bills. The newer ones having security measures in them.

Several of the fastfood chains arround here won't accept anything larger than a $20.
I would have to be very desprate to use plastic at a fast food place.

Debit card leaves a paper trail.  Heart surgery (for example) will be refused since you chose a meal that was not approved by the government.  Also skimmers love debit cards.

we use our credit card for everything instead of cash.  pay it off at the end of the month.  We don't use debit cards because when those get hacked, the hackers can clean out your bank account and it takes forever to get the bank to restore the funds AFTER you file the required police report.  Never have to file a police report for a hacked  credit card...the bank just sends us a replacement card.

Most banks will reimburse you if anything happens.

We got hit with a cloner we suspect at a drive thru once... Our bank called US to tell us, stopped the card, offered to next day air or make available for pickup at a branch new cards for us, and immediately put all the charges back in our account with no quibbling at all...

If we'd been using cash, and lost the cash, we'd have been SOL.

This is not a sky is falling post but just a prediction and take it for what it's worth. I have credit cards and use them for and when it's convenient for me. I don't use a debit card, I carry cash for day to day purchases. I do pay some bills online for the convenience and cost savings. I have experienced a problem recently with Directv. Their site will not allow me to pay my bill on line. Over the last 6 months I have called and complained and have had my bill reduced by $20.00 a month(for the next 6 months, yaaa!) for my trouble. But I believe their goal is to have all their customers on automatic withdrawal from their account or credit card and that I won't do. Many of my other accounts are making various offers to entice me to do the same.

My wife is a teacher and she has no option in receiving her pay. It must be direct deposit. Lowes is very similar. Young tech heads are coming up with more and more ways to shop and do business without ever presenting a card, you're recognized by the system when you enter the store and your name and picture flash up on their point of sale screen. All very convenient, very 21st century. I believe it is leading to a cashless society. Then you will be subject to what a computer says you have in your account. Traveling and need gas? Pump won't accept your "debit" card, says no funds available. Whip out your credit card and swipe it, you paid late last month, maybe your a bad risk, declined. Not only do you not have any cash anymore to buy the gas, there probably isn't anyone there to take it anyway.

This will lead to a one world currency and with it a one world government. I don't think I'll live to see it, but I have lived long enough to see things happen, that in my youth, would have believed impossible. I'm not wringing my hands and staying up at night worrying about all this. I have little to no control anyway. If you are a believer and study Bible prophecy you know a lot will happen before the return of Jesus and we just have to be prepared and aware. If you are not a believer, it would still be a good idea to keep an open mind about how our monetary system is evolving. Or just file this under the ramblings of an old man.

All minor hassles for now.
Soon enough the ones that are left will have a chip in their wrist that will take care of everything. Even identify which wrong rallys you attend. I maybe paranoid but when I got to gun shows or even a Ted Nugent concert I have a laminated xerox copy of my DL and leave the whole wallet at the house.

grumpy,  I would've done the exact same thing.  If a business doesn't want to accept cash whether 1 day old or 20 years,  it should not matter.

Piss on Wendy's, go to DQ instead?

I have been known to use my credit card for even filling up the scooter say 4-5 bucks or even MCd's for a 4 dollar meal.  I used  my credit card a ton more when I earned 5% cash back when reached every 50 bucks but now that my credit card company is stingier only earning 1% cash back,  it's not that great a deal anymore to use the credit card.

Gas and food purchases add up the most I use to get 50 bucks cash back nearly monthly now takes up to 3 months to get 50 bucks in cash back from credit card company.  Still, 50 bucks for free every 3 months is better than nothing.

After further review.

Getting back to the original posting, the reason why they don't take "old" bills is because they are likely to be the ones that are counterfeited. Pre-1996 20's are easiest to counterfeit as they pre-date the security measures now currently used.

There are machines designed to identify the security marks in genuine bills. But these bills are post-1996 bills.

If a business or businesses in a specific area are prone to counterfeit money being used, what options are there to ensure the money is genuine?

VISA shut me down (its their money)... my bank card (my money) still worked, so I hit the
money machine... called the Credit Union (my bank) first chance I got and they gave me a VISA security
number (I didn't save it  tickedoff ) that works 24/7, so I called them that night, answered
a bunch of questions, and the card was turned back on.

I don't blame Grumpy one bit.  The man is paying with cash.....legal tender in all fifty states (57 if your Obama).

Unless there was a plainly stated sign that stated their apparent new policy of not taking certain bills, then Grumpy had every right to be pissed about it and had every reasonable expectation that his money was just as good as everyone else's.

I would have told them that twenty dollar bill was the only means I had to pay and if they wouldn't except it as payment, then that's their problem and would have walked out.

I had kinda the same problem once at a toll booth on a bridge.  It was a three dollar toll.  All I had was a 100 dollar bill.  The lady refused to accept it and said that no other means was exceptable (with and attitude).  I told her that we have a problem as cars are backing up behind me and that 100 dollar bill is legal tender in all 50 states that that's all I have.  She began to count out 97 one dollar bills and hand it back to me......then told me to pull up so she could get my tag number.  I told her sure thing.....as I hit the gas and drove off.  Bitch.   Angry

I agree, that $20 is legal in all 50 states regardless of what their security system accepts.  I don't think it even matters if they put a sign up.
If their scanner does not accept your $20 bill it is their problem , not yours.  The manager should have know this and had a way to put a $20 in the cash register underneath the smaller bills and coins and give you the change just like they do often if you watch in many establishments.  I have seen it enough to know if I was a crook there were ALWAYS $20s to be had under the small bills and coins.

If I had the time I'd like to stand my ground and let them call the cops.  Their ignorance is not your problem.  Of course that didn't get that chicken sandwich in your belly.
